Online Poker Tournament Rankings

What a month October was! It's hard to believe that I've only been multi-tabling for a month now, but thanks to my blog I can look back and see that yes, that is the case. Of course, all I really need to do is look at my spreadsheet and see the huge increase in volume. It turns out I played more sessions in October than I did from May 1 to Sep 1 of this year. I was really surprised to see that! If you've been following along, you'll know that I was breaking even at the beginning of the month, but hit a long, steady downstreak pretty early on and it continued on for a good long time. I had a few very deep runs but not much in the profit column. I kept my confidence and good spirits, however. I know there are ups and downs. Luckily, the last week was very good to me and I made up about 2/3 of my losses for the month and ended with only a two-digit loss. That was a lot better than the $230 loss I was looking at earlier... about 2/5 my total bankroll. Looking at the big picture it was a pretty normal swing in the overall graph. You can see how the 225+ sessions for October make up a large part of the total. The April numbers are from when I was multitabling cash games and put in a lot of short sessions. In October, I think I only played a dozen cash sessions, so all the rest were either 27-180 man SNGs or MTTs. I had some more fun with the spreadsheet and have made all sorts of cool graphs tracking my relative finishes and final table appearances and so forth, but I'll keep that geeky goodness all to myself. I really feel comfortable with my game lately. I seem to make a couple of deep runs a week, and in each of them I am in there fighting to get first.

It's funny, when we were down to 36 players, I was short stacked and talked to Jeremy on the phone. We talked about how great it would be to make the final table. I told him I'd be happy with fifth place, as that was the earliest place to pay three figures.

I went into the final table as the short stack, and had a lot of scrambling to keep myself alive. I doubled up once, but that was as far as I could get. Luckily, a few others got knocked out before me.

 


Fifth place paid $111, so I am pretty happy with that. Sure, first was my goal, but I am happy with my play so no complaints. As you'll see here soon when I do my recap, this decent cash really takes the blow out of a tough month.

And the next time I talk to my brother, I need to state that I'd only be happy with first place. Heh.

Had a solid run in an 1100 player tournament this evening.  Finished in 27th place, I never was able to build up a decent stack, and had maneuvered well from 100 places with a short stack.



It's tough getting so deep and busting out and only getting a $10 payday, but I could just as easily finished at the final table and had a three figure payday, so I am not too upset.  I came pretty close, and it's always nice to get close enough that you seriously plan your way to the final table.

This comes on the tail end of another long losing streak - 29 no-cashes in a row.  I won't complain about the number of coolers and tough beats involved in that streak, because I feel good about my play and am still confident in my decisions.  Still, I have been getting frustrated, today I actually slammed my hand down on the table when I took yet another beat (usually I just roll my eyes, so that was like an 8 of 10 blow-up) so this run does take that edge off.

I think I'm going to take it a little light over the weekend.  It's fall and the leaves are changing color, so I think it might be a good time to go for a hike, maybe drive down and see the parents.  They're always happy to see me.

Follow Up - I wrote this on Friday evening.  On Saturday and Sunday, I made deep runs in similar tournaments, finishing 30/600 and 19/1000.  Jeremy expressed how unfortunate it would be if this was my "run good" to make up for the long losing streak.  Personally, I figure I'll get an MTT final table appearance here in the next few days.

Another F/U - Monday I had deep runs in 3/4 tournaments I played.  110 of 1700, 45 of 750, and 29 of 700.  All approximates, but you get the idea.  Feels great to get so deep, but frustrating to not make any sort of decent payday... the best was about triple my buy-in.
