James ‘Andy McLEOD’ Obst won his fourth career SCOOP title in 2016, one of five that Australians won this year

The 2016 PokerStars Spring Championship of Online Poker crowned five winners from Australia. The land down under was tied for ninth worldwide with Finland with five event wins, and the entire world trailed Brazil’s 21 victories during the 2016 SCOOP. Australia was in a three-way tie for fifth with Germany and Mexico with three wins in SCOOP High events, its best showing on any leaderboard.

Overall, Australians earned $2,972,939.69 from SCOOP events this year, the eighth highest total of any country. In SCOOP Low events, Aussies bagged $233,451.34 from this year’s SCOOP, the 13th most of any country, while in Mid events, that number was $734,583.21, the 11th most. SCOOP High event prize pools shipped $2,004,905.14 to Australians, the eighth highest haul of any country.

All-time, Australians have won $9,060,235.19 from SCOOP events.

Australia had 145 total cashes in SCOOP High events this year, the ninth most of any country. It also had 400 SCOOP Mid cashes (15th most overall) and 844 low-stakes cashes (21st most overall). Across all stakes, Aussies registered 1,389 in the money finishes in SCOOP events this year, the 17th highest total of any country and slightly ahead of Norway’s 1,384.

Overall, Australia sent 9,778 entrants into SCOOP events in 2016, the 19th most of any nation. This included 6,275 entrants in SCOOP Low events, 2,523 entrants in SCOOP Mid, and 980 entrants in SCOOP High events.

One of the highlights for Australia this year was the performance of James ‘Andy McLEOD’ Obst, who won his fourth career SCOOP title. It came in a $1,050 Pot Limit Omaha Rebuy Six-Max and was good for $166,000.

Obst is Australia’s all-time leader in SCOOP wins and has $735,423.35 in lifetime earnings from the spring series. He finished 10th in the SCOOP Player of the Series standings with 690 points, 235 points shy of first place. On the SCOOP High Player of the Series leaderboard, Obst landed in fifth and was only 60 points out of first.
