Slovenian authorities explained in a statement, “A male body was discovered [Friday]morning in the Ljubljanica River. National Forensic Laboratory has identified, by DNA test, the man who was found dead in the Ljubljanica River as a 29-year-old German citizen who had been missing. The criminal police investigators excluded a violent criminal offense.”

What happened to Strassmann, who disappeared in the Slovenian capital of Ljubljana while hanging out with friends, remains to be seen. A reward fund of €10,000 had been created for anyone with any information leading to his whereabouts. He reportedly turned down a side street while with friends in the city’s old town district.

A police officer told PokerNews on Saturday, “It is very sad to say that, but it is true. The body we have found on Friday is of Johannes Strassmann.” Police are still testing “bodily fluids.”

There are many questions to be answered, but the thoughts of the poker community were largely with Strassmann and his family. One poster on TwoPlusTwo wrote, “Tragic, tragic news. Seemed such a calm, happy, and genuinely good person. My thoughts are with his family and loved ones.” Another person added, “I just heard for the first time about this whole thing and it made me really sad. I met Johannes twice at EPT and he was an extremely nice person. RIP Johannes, this drink is for you.”

According to a post made on Saturday around 1:00pm Eastern Time on a Facebook page entitled “Missing Johannes Strassmann” (pictured), the cause of death was drowning and the time of death was Saturday, June 21 at Midnight. The post added, “It was a terrible accident. Johannes was not involved in an illegal poker game. He was just visiting some old friends here in Ljubljana. Everything was just fine until this accident.”

Last October, Strassmann finished fifth in the UKIPT London Super High Roller Event for $363,000, one of five six-figure live scores on his poker resume, according to the Hendon Mob. He is #20 on the all-time German money list.

Our thoughts go out to Strassmann’s family and friends.
