It’s not easy to win a Sunday Major. But, to win one and then follow it up with a final table one week later is pretty remarkable. Such is the life of Brandon anybodybut Setzer, who took down the PokerStars Sunday 500 for $90,000 on July 11th. One week later, he final tabled the Sunday Second Chance for another $21,000. Two weeks and $110,000 later, Setzer has moved up close to the Top 500 in the PocketFives Worldwide Rankings. He sat down with PocketFives.com to rehash his run.

Of particular concern to Setzer down the stretch in the Sunday 500 was DoylesRoom Brunson 10 member Chris moorman1 Moorman (pictured), a former #1 player in the PocketFives.com Poker Rankings who took 25th for $2,200. Setzer told us, “Toward the end of the tournament, the play was kind of crazy. People were going all-in almost every hand, but nobody would get knocked out. The low stacks kept doubling up, but we finally made it to the final table.” He entered the final table near the bottom of the totem pole in chips.

His crowning glory online was a $40 promotional tournament on PokerStars dubbed the Micro Million. Setzer chopped the event four-handed and pocketed $95,000, his largest online score to date. As an encore, his win in the Sunday 500 affirms that he can play with the Web’s heavy hitters: “There were a lot fewer entries in the Sunday 500. It’s such a good tournament, but it also has a tough field. It feels great to finally have one of those under my belt.”

His chop of the Micro Million gave him an instant cash windfall that allowed him to enter Sunday Majors and high-stakes rebuys. The Micro Million took place on Valentine’s Day. How has he fared since? “I made a lot of deep runs and would get it in good, but just couldn’t quite get over that hump. I took a break from online poker for the better part of the last month. I had to try out some of the live events going on in Las Vegas during the World Series of Poker.”

Setzer cashed in a $500 No Limit Hold’em tournament held during this month’s Venetian Deep Stack Extravaganza and also took to the felts at the Golden Nugget in Downtown Las Vegas: “I played a lot of the Venetian Deep Stack events. I also played in the Golden Nugget Main Event, which had a great structure. The Caesars $1K was really good and I didn’t really like the $1,500 WSOP events, but the $2,500 one was pretty good. The Main Event, of course, was incredible.”

Speaking of the Main Event, Setzer ran pocket kings into pocket aces early on in the $10,000 buy-in tournament. He ultimately check-folded on the turn and his opponent showed him the goods. Then, Setzer picked up pocket aces, but the player in the big blind flopped the nut straight with 6-5. Five hands before his 2010 WSOP Main Event run came to an end, Setzer called a raise in the blinds with pocket deuces. The flop came A-10-2 rainbow and the action checked around. The turn was a three and Setzer ran into pocket threes to drop a massive pot.

Despite the ill-timed rush of cards, Setzer reached Day 2 of the Main Event and pushed his remaining chips in with pocket kings against pocket fives. Sure enough, his opposition spiked a five on the turn and that was all she wrote for the North Carolina native.

The roller coaster of a tournament provided him with important insight for the future: “Playing live is so much different than online. I learned so much about my game in general playing with so many great people every day. I also gained a lot of confidence and feel much more comfortable at the tables now.”
