July 3rd marked an Independence Day of sorts for DoylesRoom Brunson 10 candidate Dan djk123Kelly (pictured), who banked a colossal $1.3 million for winning the $25,000 No Limit Hold’em Six-Max event held at the 2010 World Series of Poker (WSOP). The seven-figure payday was the second largest given out at this year’s World Series, which emanates at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. A star-studded array of fans included DoylesRoom namesake Doyle Brunson.

Brunson (pictured) was introduced to the crowd early on and was present to cheer on Kelly, who is one of four players vying to become the seventh member of the USA-friendly site’s Brunson 10. Kelly entered the Six-Handed event’s final table in second to last on the leaderboard, which also features fellow PocketFives.com members Faraz The-ToiletJaka, David Doc SandsSands, and Michael Martine23 Martin. Although the leaderboard was not updated as of press time, Kelly will likely vault into the lead with only the Main Event remaining on the schedule.

Kelly busted Eugene Katchalov in sixth place when his Q-J outran pocket sixes. There was a roar from the crowd when a queen fell on the flop and Katchalov could never catch up. Kelly made two pair by the time all was said and done and widened his lead over the field. Then, Kelly sent Mikael Thuritz home in fifth place when his 6-5 of hearts drew out on A-J after the money went in on a 9-4-J flop with two hearts. A seven on the turn gave Kelly even more outs to a straight and a heart on the river secured the flush. We were on the other side of the Amazon Room when the red eight hit and hundreds of heads immediately turned.

Jason JCarver Somerville exited in fourth place after running A-J into Shawn Buchanan’s pocket aces. Somerville was drawing dead on the river, but he picked up $386,000 for his efforts. The tournament marked Somerville’s third career WSOP final table. He also made the semifinals of the Heads-Up No Limit Hold’em Championship this year and picked up $220,000. Among those railing Somerville in the Amazon Room was Kevin BeL0WaB0Ve Saul.

2010 double bracelet winner Frank Kassela landed in third place after Buchanan hit a straight on the river against Kassela’s two pair. In the tournament’s final hand, Buchanan was all-in pre-flop with pocket jacks against Kelly’s A-10. In a fitting finish to the high-octane event, Kelly spiked an ace on the river to capture his first WSOP bracelet. The final table wrapped up in under five hours. Here were the results:

1. Dan djk123 Kelly – $1,315,518
2. Shawn Buchanan – $812,941
3. Frank Kassela – $556,053
4. Jason JCarver Somerville – $386,125
5. Mikael Thuritz – $272,084
6. Eugene Katchalov – $194,559

A top prize of $570,000 is up for grabs and Peters is gunning for his first top 30 finish in a Las Vegas WSOP event. You can catch the restart of this event at 3:00pm PT on Sunday.

Corwin mig.com Mackey leads the $2,500 No Limit Hold’em event (#56) with 75 players to go.
