Doc Sands Sixth in WPT Bay 101 Entering Day 2

Today, the survivors from Day 1A and Day 1B of the World Poker Tour’s (WPT) Bay 101 Shooting Star tournament will assemble in the California casino for Day 2. In a “Survivor”-like twist, it’s now anyone’s event to win, as 126 players will battle to make the money and claim the $878,000 top prize. Taking sixth on the leaderboard is David Doc Sands Sands (pictured at right), who sits at #2 worldwide in the Online Poker Rankings. Sands will bring an arsenal of 106,900 chips to Day 2, with the entire field trailing Day 1A chip leader Vanna Tea’s 143,900.

Sands will captain Table 41 on Wednesday, where his opponents will include former WPT Foxwoods World Poker Finals winner Nick Schulman, PokerStars North American Poker Tour (NAPT) Venetian Main Event champ Tom Marchese, Full Tilt Poker pro Mike Matusow, and PocketFives.com member Christina lindeyloo22 Lindley. Sands doubled up Shooting Star and WPT Host Mike Sexton after running pocket kings into Sexton’s pocket aces. The board came 9-4-2-3-4 and Sexton doubled through. Nevertheless, the young gun is in prime position to make a run at his first WPT final table.
Seventh place on the Day 1B leaderboard went to Mohsin chicagocards1 Charania (pictured at left), who amassed a stack of 94,600 chips. That total is good for 12th place entering Day 2 and he’ll take to Table 21, where his competition will include Sexton and former L.A. Poker Classic chip leader Masa Kagawa. Charania collected a $5,000 Shooting Star bounty after sending John “The Razor” Phan to the rails on Tuesday. Charania’s J-9 of clubs outdrew Phan’s A-7 of hearts after a jack hit on the river.

Taylor taypaur Paur (pictured at right) was ousted on Tuesday after pushing all-in from the cutoff with 10-9 of diamonds. McLean Karr, the chip leader at the time, made the call with pocket queens. The flop came A-K-J to make matters interesting, but a 10 on the turn filled Karr’s straight and no queen came on the river for a chop. Paur finished 37th in the L.A. Poker Classic Main Event and currently sits at #8 in the Rankings. Paur took down an event held during January’s Ultimate Bet Online Championship (UBOC) for $125,000 and chopped a Full Tilt Online Poker Series (FTOPS) tournament in November for $189,000.

Vivek Psyduck Rajkumar (pictured at left), one of the Shooting Stars in the tournament, was eliminated after a flush draw failed to materialize. James Calderaro, who finished 13th in the 2009 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event, was his executioner. Also sunk on Day 1B was “Poker2Nite” host Joe JoeSebok Sebok, whose A-K could not withstand Bobby Suer’s A-J. Suer made a Broadway straight on the river to send Sebok home. If you miss his smiling face, you can tune into Versus every Wednesday night at 11:00pm ET for the latest episode of the UB.com sponsored poker news show “Poker2Nite.”
