A total of 321 players entered the PokerStars World Championship of Online Poker’s $10,300 buy-in High-Roller tournament over the weekend. In the end, one man took home an enormous payday of $617,925 for first, one of the largest prizes ever dished out online. His name: Scott dorinvandy Dorin. A graduate of Vanderbilt University who now lives in Las Vegas, Dorin is fresh off a second place showing in Event 1 of the recently-completed Full Tilt Online Poker Series, where he cashed for $120,781. One day removed from his big WCOOP victory, PocketFives.com sat down with this rising poker star to get his reaction.
He ran well in the $10,300 buy-in WCOOP tournament, defeating a star-studded field that featured nearly every Team PokerStars Pro member you can name. He told PocketFives.com, “Obviously I ran unbelievably well. I got into so many great situations, such as having A-K versus another player’s A-Q three times in late position. When there were three tables left, I went on an enormous rush. I sucked out twice within one orbit: My 10-7 suited beat A-K suited and my Q-10 beat K-3 after a K-Q-9 flop.” Lucky or not, Dorin navigated one of the most competitive fields I’ve seen.
After the tournament, Dorin did what any player who just won over $600,000 would do: “I went bananas, of course. However, I was really calm and in the zone throughout the tournament.” During the High Roller event, Dorin managed to stay composed, despite the six-figure paydays on the line for the top seven finishers: “I didn’t really think about the money. It’s easier for me if I don’t have the lobby open looking at payouts. Also, the payout structure was great. Even though I wasn’t watching it while I was playing, I checked it out when it was first posted. It makes it easier to play your game and not have to think about chops at the final table when the payout structure is as gradual as it was.”
Dorin has three World Series of Poker cashes to his name. The largest came as a result of a 49th place finish in a $2,000 buy-in No Limit Hold’em event during the 2007 WSOP. You’ll often find him seated at cash game tables in Las Vegas, his hometown. On what it takes to be a successful poker player, he commented, “The best way to become good at poker is to play online cash games. You can’t win unless you are a good thinking player. Anyone who has a clue can donk their way through a poorly-structured Sunday Million, but it takes a lot of time and studying to beat even $2/$4 online. Online cash games teach you how to play later streets, not just pre-flop and on the flop.”
Like many other PocketFivers, Dorin got his starting play on the halls of his alma mater, Vanderbilt University. With the help of hall-mate Will Reiter during his freshman year at Vandy, he stated, “I started playing $10 dollar cash games with the guys on my hall. We used to grind $5 dollar sit and go tournaments on Party Poker. I never really made any significant money until I started watching videos at the beginning of my junior year and things shot up from there.” Dorin was a member of CardRunners.
In the Full Tilt Online Poker Series, Dorin finished second in Event #1, a $216 buy-in No Limit event that attracted 5,779 players. The Full Tilt Poker cash was worth $120,781 and came about one month ago. In December, he won the PokerStars Sunday Second Chance for $51,084. He wanted to thank Jerry DontBluffmePLZZ Vanstrydonck and Nick 20suckoutz Howard for helping him make it through the WCOOP event.
Congratulations to Scott dorinvandy Dorin for taking down the $10,300 buy-in High Roller No Limit Hold’em tournament during the 2008 WCOOP. Visit PokerStars for the rest of the tournament series.
