On Sunday, Poker Hall of Famer Doyle Brunson (pictured) made the home page of TMZ for all the wrong reasons. Rather than tout Brunson’s accomplishments or talk about his ongoing health battles, TMZ showcased a series of TweetsBrunson sent about former Olympian and current reality TV star Bruce Jenner becoming more like a woman.

If you missed the story entirely, Jenner is taking estrogen hormones in an effort to look and feel more like a woman. He has separated from Kris Jenner, is wearing his hair out, and there are rumors of plastic surgery on his lips. Jenner is about to celebrate his 40th anniversary of winning the gold medal in the decathlon in the 1976 Montreal Olympics and whose life can be seen in its entirety on the E! Network.

Back to Brunson now. Earlier this month, he sent out a series of Tweets in which he was disappointed with Jenner’s decision:

The reaction to Brunson’s Tweets was mixed. Daniel Negreanu, always not shy about sharing his opinion, wrote, “Doyle’s objections are based on a traditional view of the Bible on homosexuality, so it’s a starting point.” Poker playerMatt Keikoansaid to Brunson, “That may be the most ignorant thing you’ve ever said.”

Kara Scott, whom Brunson referenced in his Tweet, responded, “If Bruce is Trans, then it was probably more painful for him to live constrained & hiding than it was for you to lose him as a hero… You have such a huge reach & the potential to be a powerful voice for good. Esp as someone whose life was seen as unconventional… Transphobia & being treated as wrong are behind the scary high suicide rates for Trans people. Also, high assault & murder rates…. The very real courage it takes to come out & face hatred & ridicule us heroic in my view. Their very survival is sometimes the cost.”

In a poll that received over 36,000 responses on TMZ that asked for readers’ views on Brunson’s sex change comments, 71% selected “It’s his right,” while only 29% selected “Shameful.”
