If you played on FanDuelor DraftKingsover the weekend, then you might have noticed a ton of people logging in and setting lineups. In fact, according to ESPN, DraftKings and FanDuel had their biggest weekend of the season in Week 5 despite a data leak that has lawmakers calling for formal regulation of the industry.

The numbers are pretty amazing. As ESPN outlined, “Entries into the DraftKings’ and FanDuel’s guaranteed prize pool NFL tournaments hit season highs at both sites. DraftKings received 4.14 million entries, up from 3.75 million last week, while FanDuel received 3.38 million entries, up from 3.18 million last week.” Therefore, DraftKings’ entries grew by 10%, while FanDuel’s entries were up 11%.

The revenue numbers taken in from tournaments with guarantees were equally impressive. Whereas we saw plenty of overlays the first few weeks of the season, ESPN outlined, “DraftKings took in $25 million in entry fees into the guaranteed prize pool tournaments and paid out $22.4 million. The $2.6 million in profit was up from $1.9 million last week. FanDuel saw a similar increase in revenue Sunday, taking in $20.6 million and paying out $17.1 million.”

As you probably know by now, in Week 3, DraftKings employee Ethan Haskell posted ownership percentages for players whose games had not yet started. The same week, he won $350,000 in a game on FanDuel, raising questions about the availability and use of inside information. The New York Times, Forbes, and USA Today have been among the mainstream outlets covering the story.

However, it’s not the recent publicity that has players flocking to DFS sites in droves, according to Online Poker Report’s Chris Grove. He said on Twitter, “Momentum of massive ad blitz is just continuing. Story was minor compared to blitz.” iSpot reported that the daily fantasy sports industry outspent the entire beer industry in the month leading up to and including the NFL’s opening week. According to ESPN, FanDuel was the biggest advertiser in the last week.

Poker writer Eric Raskin opined on Twitter that the data leaked proved “there’s no such thing as bad publicity.”

FanDuel and DraftKings already have their seven-figure guaranteed tournaments in the lobby for Week 6. Both games start on Sunday, October 18 at 1pm ET. On FanDuel, there’s a $5 Million NFL Sunday Million that guarantees $1 million to first and has a buy-in of $25.
