Gilbert Arenas(pictured), a three-time NBA All-Star and amateur poker player, was spotted at the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure this week making an accidental play that quickly cost him his entire stack in the $10,000 buy-in Main Event.

Arenas was one of 295 players battling it out for a share of $10 million guaranteed on Day 1A of PokerStars’ much anticipated yearly event at the Atlantis resort in the Bahamas. According to JC PrtyPsuxAlvarado, soon after the start of Level 3, the former NBA star tossed out two chips attempting to call a raise of 600 by Dylan Pokerl)evil Hortin. But, as it turned out, the chips totaled 1,100 and were ruled a raise. The hand was then folded back to Hortin, who made it 5,000 to go.

“Arenas made a comment along the lines of, ‘Oh, you’re going to do me like that? I still like my hand, though.’ He then moved all-in for around 27,000, to which Hortin snap-called,” said Alvarado.

Hortin turned over Q-Q to face Arenas’ Q-J, leaving few opportunities for the NBA shooting guard. The flop came J-T-9 and put Arenas in an unexpectedly optimistic position, but blanks on the turn and river brought no help and Hortin put Arenas’ tournament life to an end.

The loss isn’t likely to sting for long. In 2008, Arenas signed a staggering six-year $111 million contract – which many have voted as being the worst of all-time – with the Washington Wizards. A later restructuring of the deal will see that he gets paid handsomely until 2016, according to Sports Illustrated.

Before he took his seat in the Main Event, Arenas sat down to play cash games and supposedly blew through thousands at the $2/$5 NL table while waiting to play stakes more to his liking. “First hand he is in the BB and announces that he will be all-in,” said TwoPlusTwo poster PhatPots. “LP raises $20, and he keeps his word to a blind $1K all-in. He was all-in at least 7-10 times in 30 minutes. Maybe lost only $3k-$4k though cause some of the table only had a few hundred.”

He was later seen at a high-stakes table laughing and joking with pros Jason treysfull21Mercier (pictured) and Scott Seiver. He was spotted scooping a huge pot with a set of tens and then losing one to Mercier before deciding to cash out with what looked to be around $30,000, according to PokerListings.

Arenas’ poker exploits were thrust into the spotlight in 2010 when a dispute over a high-stakes card game led to a bizarre incident in which he and a teammate ended up drawing pistols on each other in the locker room. According to reports, Arenas owed Jarvis Crittenton $25,000, but refused to pay the debt. In an attempt to intimidate Crittenton, Arenas allegedly pulled out three guns and put them on a chair near Crittenton’s locker. His teammate responded by pulling a gun of his own. Arenas then said that he was “too old to fistfight and threatened to shoot Crittenton in the face.” Crittenton responded by threatening to shoot Arenas in his injured knee.

The former All-Star isn’t shy about giving the media a glimpse of his backroom gambling habits either. He has admitted to playing for high-stakes on the team jet, rushing to the locker room during halftime to play online poker, and taking former teammate Larry Hughes for $17,000. According to Arenas, he was able to use his poker winnings to pay his $5,000 a month living expenses during the entire 2006 season.

Although he was knocked out of the PCA early, it’s clear that he won’t be out of the game for long. “The NBA says I get 20-something [million] this year?” He asked the press in 2010. “I stopped keeping track.”
