Old Trafford hosts the Grand Prix Poker Tour on January 16 and 17

From January 16 to 17, the PartyPoker-sponsored Grand Prix Poker Tour, or GPPT, heads to the 75,635-seat Old Trafford in Greater Manchester. The buy-in is £60+£10. According to Simon Trumper, Dusk Till Dawn’s Club Director, GPPT Old Trafford will be the biggest event ever hosted in the North West of England.

Old Trafford is home to the famed Manchester United football club and makes for an iconic setting for a poker tournament. Free stadium tours, a PartyPoker lounge, and question-and-answer sessions with ex-Manchester United players will all take place as well, allowing poker players to immerse themselves in a unique football experience. Old Trafford is the largest club stadium of any football team in the United Kingdom.

Trumper called the tournament “a grassroots poker event trying to attract new players and revive players who may have drifted away from the game.” The gala will be held in the stadium’s conference facilities, as Trumper joked, “Playing on the pitch in Manchester in December wouldn’t be much fun.”

Here’s the schedule for the GPPT stop at Old Trafford:

GPPT Old Trafford has a £250,000 guaranteed prize pool with both live and online options for Day 1 and a live finale set for Day 2 on January 17. That tournament and the High Roller Event will be streamed online for those who can’t make the journey to Manchester.

A total of 4,167 entrants are needed for GPPT Old Trafford to break its guarantee. Trumper gave us the attendance figures thus far: “We have had over 3,300 players play each of the first two Grand Prix Poker Tour events and over 2,400 play the first online Grand Prix Poker Tour event.”

Live Day 1s for the Old Trafford event began on Sunday, January 10 at Manchester 235. Live Day 1s will also take place at the same venue on January 14 and 15. Online Day 1s began on PartyPoker on January 10 and run daily through January 16. Satellites are running daily at PartyPoker starting at one cent.

Old Trafford is the latest in what seems to be a craze of hosting poker tournaments in well-known football stadiums. Trumper gave us his take on why these events have become so popular, saying, “Football fans and poker fans overlap in the key demographic for poker. We thought it would be a cool experience for fans to experience a behind-the-scenes look at the stadium with tours and see their stadium transformed into a 100-table card room. Football stadiums are big and we need a big space to accommodate the players required for the guarantee.”

After Old Trafford, the GPPT heads to St James’ Park in Newcastle from February 20 to 21.
