Taking fourth in the 2013 World Series of Poker Main Event was France’s Sylvain Loosli(pictured). A sponsored pro of Winamax, Loosli was the highest finishing European in the tournament and earned a whopping $2.7 million. We posted a thread in the Poker Community forum on PocketFives asking for member questions for Loosli and were able to get through quite a few of them. With that in mind, here are his responses!

PocketFives Member: Were you angle shooting with your K-K min raise? Here’s the hand in question: “At 250/500, JC Tranraised to 1.1M. Loosli went ‘oops’ by tossing 1.5M (holding K-K), which was considered a raise, and he then had to put 1.7M. JC Tran called, but didn’t lose more after the flop.”

Sylvain Loosli: I wanted to min-raise and basically forgot to put one more chip in. I knew that JC would call with almost any two in that spot. I wanted to min-raise; I just forgot.

PocketFives Member: I know that you must be disappointed with not winning the bracelet, but were you satisfied with your play at the final table overall?

Sylvain Loosli: Overall, I was satisfied. Still, I made a few mistakes I regret, especially in a hand against Marc McLaughlin (pictured) on a flop of K-8-X with three spades. He check-raised me on the flop and I clicked back. He ended up shoving and had the flush. Maybe I was tired at that point, so that was the only misplayed hand I remember. I could have made different choices there.

PocketFives: How tough is it to come so close to a Main Event bracelet and $8.3 million, but go out in fourth? You still made $2.7 million and gained fame as a November Niner.

Sylvain Loosli: It’s a lot of money and it’s a very big achievement, but you’re so disappointed to be so close to making history and getting a bracelet. It’s not about the money necessarily. Obviously, $8 million is sweet, but it’s more about becoming the World Champion and marking your name into poker history. It’s not easy to bust out of the Main Event. You can always regret some small things, so it’s frustrating, but in a few days, I’ll realize I did great. I know that anyone would love to be in my shoes.

PocketFives Member: What preparation did you do leading up to the final table?

Sylvain Loosli: Ludovic CutsssLacay (pictured) and Davidi legrouzin Kitai from Team Winamax coached me. I worked a lot with Nicolas Cardyn too. We spent a lot of time together talking strategy. We spent a lot of time gathering information about anything we could find. I thought I prepared myself well. I also played a lot of live poker to improve my live game. I went to Dublin for the Winamax Poker Open and finished second. I went to play at WSOP Europe. It has been quite a busy schedule for the last two months.

PocketFives Member: What will you do with your winnings?

Sylvain Loosli: The plans are to keep investing and keep doing what I started to do like investing in some small companies. I might finally buy a flat on my own.

PocketFives: You’re originally from France, but moved to London. How did the move go and when did it happen?

Sylvain Loosli: I moved two years ago. I moved to be able to play on the dot-com online poker sites. If I had stayed in France, I could only play on the French sites. I wanted to play on as many sites as I could. It wasn’t such a tough move. I lived in London before and went there for an internship. It’s close to Paris. Most of my friends live in Paris and I have family there too.

PocketFives Member: It was said you are a cash game player. Are you going to be playing more tournaments now?

Sylvain Loosli: I already started playing more tournaments and have been quite successful in them. I feel like I really progressed a lot. I understand a lot of things about tournaments. I’m very confident that I can make another final table soon. My next goal is to win an EPT event or a WSOP bracelet. When you make $2.7 million, now it’s more about achieving something big and winning a title.

PocketFives: When and how did you sign with Winamax?

Sylvain Loosli: I signed with Winamax in the beginning of September. I knew the manager of Winamax and some of their players, so it was quite natural, I guess. When I was playing in the Main Event, I knew if I final tabled it, they would make me a proposal. That’s what they did. I also had proposals from other poker sites. I took my time, we discussed it a bit, we negotiated a bit, and we finally agreed to the deal.

PocketFives: How were you fed hole card information during the television broadcast, which was on a 15-minute delay?

Sylvain Loosli: I had two friends back in London watching for me. You obviously want to know what people are holding because everyone was getting the same information, so I had to get it as well. It was a bit helpful just to understand some of their strategy. I understood Ryan Riess was 3betting very polarized, for example. That’s what we understood from the broadcast.
