Hold'em Excellence: From Beginner to Winner

Hold'em Excellence was the first poker book I ever bought and I am very glad I did. It is a slim volume (175 pages) which covers the basics in an elegantly simple manner. The Subtitle "from beginner to winner" sums it up nicely - this book is for the beginning player but the strategy discussed will improve your game by leaps and bounds.

For more advanced players this book is not without it's uses. Even the best of the best can always benefit from a back to basics refresher from time to time and I can think of no book that does it better. Also if you are a seasoned pro and want a book to give to a friend just starting out in the game this is an excellent choice.

Hold'em Excellence was written in 2000 right before the poker explosion and it is almost exclusively a guide to playing limit, specifically live Casino games. Limit poker has fallen out of favor these days with the popularity of no limit trounaments, but this is the game that poker pros have been perfecting for years. Lou Krieger takes that accumulated wisdom and passes it on to the novice.

If you are looking for a "poker for dummies" without feeling like you are taking the short bus to school, then Hold'em Excellence is for you. The graphical hand ranking chart, which includes what hands to play and from what position, is worth the price of the book by itself.
