According to Michelle Minton and Online Poker Report, a hearing is scheduled for March 5 in the House Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security, and Investigations to discuss Congressman Jason Chaffetz‘s Restoring America’s Wire Act, or RAWA. The bill would prohibit online gambling in the US, including in the three states where it’s already regulated: New Jersey, Nevada, and Delaware.

The hearing is not yet listed on the Subcommittee’s website. RAWA comes at the behest of Las Vegas Sands CEO Sheldon Adelson, who has promised to spend “whatever it takes” to eliminate online gambling in the US. Adelson’s land-based casinos include the Venetian and Palazzo in Las Vegas and Sands Bethlehem in Pennsylvania.

Online Poker Report explained, “The news of the hearing will come as no surprise to those following the issue. Supporters of RAWA attempted to secure a hearing toward the end of the lame duck session in 2014, but were rebuffed by a wave of pressure from conservative groups who found RAWA’s unilateral demolishing of legal, state-regulated industry troubling. A hearing on the issue was expected in 2015 and presaged by reports that Adelson had personally met with several members of the House Judiciary Committee.”

Here’s what Minton wrote on Twitter:

Online Poker Report’s Chris Grove told PocketFives on Thursday that he doesn’t expect RAWA to be a serious contender to become law: “A hearing is the easiest way to appease Adelson. The optimal outcome for anyone with a capital issue in this is to have constant tension on internet gambling. If Congress resolves that tension, it stops being an issue people can profit from. Their optimal course of action is for the issue to remain at a stalemate.”
