Jason treysfull21 Mercier (pictured) has taken a slightly more aggressive approach than most to ensure he sticks with one of his New Years resolutions: by betting a huge amount of cash. The two-time WSOP bracelet winner recently announced he is looking to wager at least six-figures that he can abstain from alcohol for all of 2014.

Anyone want to do a no alcohol bet for 2014? Minimum 100k please,” he Tweeted to his 80,000+ followers just days before New Year’s Eve.

The Tweet quickly generated plenty of interest from fellow poker pros Mike timexMcDonald, Brett Richey, and Andrew achen Chen wanting to know more about the terms of the bet. McDonald asked Mercier, “how often do you drink,” while Richey responded, “you gotta lay me odds.”

Shaun shaundeebDeeb also chimed in, but made it clear he had no intention of quitting drinking for the year: “I rather do a who drinks more alcohol bet,” he quipped. Actress and poker player Tiffany Michelle seemed to be Mercier’s best bet for a taker, saying, “I might be seriously interested in this… let’s discuss at PCA?”

Win or lose, Mercier likely wouldn’t stress much about the money. In 2013, the Team PokerStars Pro scored his biggest tournament cash to date, taking second at the EPT Grand Final Super High Roller Event in Monte Carlo for $1.4 million. The deep finish added to his 2009 and 2011 WSOP gold bracelets and puts his total live winnings at nearly $10 million.

If Mercier’s website holds any clues to the pro’s 2014 mindset, accepting the no alcohol challenge could be a bad bet. In an October blog post, he wrote about getting his life organized and the fact he has regained his “faith in God.” “One thing a lot of people don’t know about me is that I’m a Christian. It’s not something that I’ve been very open about over the last 6 years since coming into the limelight,” he said. “These past few months I have had some major changes happen in my way of thinking about life.”

Mercier is hardly the first poker pro to put his money where his mouth is on a bet to deprive himself of one of life’s little pleasures. Last August, legendary prop bettor Phil Ivey (pictured) posted a picture of himself drinking a glass of wine on Twitter with a caption reading, “Big no drinking day starts today… My last sip.” The amount of the bet was unclear, but Poker Listings speculated that it could be close to $10 million, quite a bit more than Mercier’s $100,000.

Antonio Esfandiari, winner of the One Drop WSOP event, jumped in the prop betting madness last year as well, wagering a reported $500,000 that he could go a full year without sex, or having a “release of any kind.” One Spanish site reported that Esfandiari had lost the bet, but PocketFives was unable to confirm.

While the terms of Mercier’s bet remain unclear, the move seems to be a genuine attempt for self-improvement. But anyone thinking of accepting the wager would do well to be cautious and read a few more lines up on his Twitter account: “Happy New Year! Set goals, make plans, grow, adjust, improve, live life to the fullest, love, and never sell yourself short. GLGL in 2014!”
