Recently, Bernard JLizard Wright took down his fifth Online Poker Triple Crown. In order to rack up his fifth accolade, Wright had to win three $10,000 prize pool non-satellite tournaments across three sites tracked for the Online Poker Rankings. Wright racked up over $10,000 in cashes as a result, adding 362 PLB Points to his points total. PocketFives.com caught up with Wright to get the inside scoop on his fifth PocketFives Triple Crown.

For his first win, Wright barreled through the field of the Full Tilt $50 Cubed for $6,200. The tournament’s prize pool approached $23,000 and, four days later, he was up to his winning ways once again. This time, Wright recorded a “W” in the PokerStars $7,500 Guaranteed, a $55 No Limit Hold’em Six-Max tournament that surpassed its guarantee by $4,000. The second victory for his Triple Crown earned him $2,500. Two days later, the feat was secure, as he took down the Absolute Poker Nightly $10,000 Turbo for $3,200 and, more importantly, his fifth Triple Crown.

Winning a Triple Crown means that a player has been dominating online, for a week at least. Wright told PocketFives.com, “They are fun to win even though you don’t get anything for them. The new badges in the profiles I think help the excitement, as I can watch the number go up. I have a new goal of getting on the highest PLB board for Triple Crowns.” Shaun mathclub Goldsbury (pictured) holds the record for the largest PLB tally for a Triple Crown at 1,762 points. Thirteen players have accrued at least 1,000 points while pursuing the award.

The final tournament for his Triple Crown followed a Turbo format. He explained that while he typically doesn’t enter Turbos, the ones found on the CEREUS Network sites UB.com and Absolute Poker seem to be softer. As to his strategy, JLizard told us, “It seems like amateurs play way too loose in Turbos. Because of the faster structure and since the tables are full of amateurs, you should play tight and take advantage. Push/fold strategy is also different in Turbos. A lot of people, myself included, make the mistake of pushing too light too soon in them.”

After he was let go from his job, Wright began pursuing an interest in chess. When the poker boom hit, many chess players made the transition to Texas Hold’em and Wright followed suit: “I wish I had been quicker to get going, but it took over a year of a friend telling me to start playing online poker before I realized I could make some real money. I was into chess so much and didn’t need another game obsession.”

Wright admitted that he’s notoriously known online for calling two streets with a Royal Flush at a $0.25/$0.50 table: “I thought I just had a flush and there were two aces on the board. To this day, I still get people giving me guff for that and it must have been five years ago.” His opponent allegedly held quad aces in the hand.

He has one child, Ronan Wright, who is 20 months old. In addition, a baby girl is on the way in December. He explained that juggling parenting duties would be tougher if his profession were anything but playing poker: “I think I would have a hard time working 50 hours a week at a regular job and doing my share of the child care load. As it is, I basically work the opposite schedule as my wife, so the flexibility of poker, especially online poker, is clutch.” Prior to playing poker for a living, Wright was a waiter.

We wrapped up our interview by asking Wright what advice he has for up-and-coming players in the game. If this is an accurate description of you, then listen up: “For most of us who aren’t super geniuses at poker, the game is really more about mental preparation than being good. So many people on downswings say, ‘Variance this and variance that” or ‘I run so bad.’ You can’t say these things and expect to win. You have to stay positive and believe you can win or you will just wither and die.”
