Moneymaker: How an Amateur Poker Player Turned $40into $2.5 Million at the World Series of Poker
by Chris Moneymaker
This book tells a very interesting story that a lot of amateur players will relate to. Moneymaker is an accountant from Tennessee with credit card debt and a wife and kid to support. You can’t get any more Regular Joe than Chris Moneymaker.
Early on it appears that Chris Moneymaker is probably a compulsive gambler and problem drinker as he manages to run a stake of a few grand into sixty thousand mostly by betting on sports, before losing it all in one night in a drunken stupor. This is no hard-luck story however.
In this book we get an inside look into how he earned a seat to play in the World Series of Poker by putting up only $40 for a satellite at Pokerstars, and the adventure that followed. How he overcame first-day jitters sitting with his heroes, learning from the pros, and the Main Event experience--Moneymaker describes it all with glee and even now, with a sense of unbelief. He still has the feeling today that it was all a dream and he might wake up at any moment.
Everyone who has won the WSOP had to have a bit of luck on his side. Moneymaker, as this book reveals, was a bit luckier than most. I really enjoyed reading about an ordinary guy fulfilling every poker player’s dream. I wish him well. His story did a lot for poker, and this is a good book in which he was honest enough to show himself as he really is.
