10: Daniel Negreanu “Literally Quits” a $10K Tournament Over First Card Rule

In September, Daniel Negreanu got a bit testy following a run-in with the so-called “First Card off the Deck” rule, which was a hot button issue in 2013. Negreanu purposely went all-in and busted from the EPT Barcelona High Roller event, later Tweeting, “The first card off the deck rule is so poorly enforced it makes me not even want to play! So absurdly anti-player and customer service! I put my small blind in and was standing next to my chair. Dealer kills my hand immediately. So, I just literally quit the tourney. I was 100% aware of the rule and did not break the rule. It was ruled 100% incorrectly by the TD because the rule is absurdly stupid.” Amazingly, Negreanu reentered the tournament and finished second.

9: Tom Dwan Shelled with “Biggest Loss Ever”

Shortly after the Negreanu story surfaced, Tom Dwan revealed on Twitter that he had suffered his “biggest loss ever,” which later reportedly turned out to be $4 million. Dwan Tweeted at the time, “In Taiwan for the 1st time ever… Not leaving the airport tho. Maybe next trip. Had my biggest loss ever yesterday.” He was in Macau at StarWorld when the loss happened, supposedly during a 24-hour marathon session.

8: Greg Raymer Arrested on Prostitution Charges

In March, 2004 World Series of Poker Main Event champion Greg Raymer (pictured) was picked up on prostitution charges at a hotel in North Carolina. According to ABC News, Raymer “was one of six men who responded to an advertisement posted by undercover police on a popular website men often seek out female prostitutes.” The charges were dropped in October. According to CardPlayer, Raymer completed 75 hours of community service.

7: Open Face Chinese Poker: Fantasyland Builds

Also in March, Court Harrington wrote a strategy article about the then-booming game of Open Face Chinese Poker. Harrington talked about optimal ways to take advantage of Fantasyland in OFC, saying, “Going for a bigger hand on the bottom is more intuitive. Novice players can miss out on the chance to develop their top and middle hands when the opportunity presents itself.”

6: Biggest Winner in This Year’s WSOP Main Event: The Taxman

After the 2013 WSOP Main Event wrapped up, PocketFives published an article outlining how much money tax authorities stood to make from this year’s November Nine. In total, the IRS collected $8.6 million out of the $25.9 million awarded at the final table, while all tax authorities combined raked in $9.6 million, or 37%. Talk about a merry Christmas for Uncle Sam and company.
