Longtime PocketFiver Niall firaldoFarrell (pictured) won the European Poker Tour’s Malta Main Event for €534,000, or $587,000. Farrell made a deal heads-up with fellow PocketFiver Alen lilachaa Bilic, who cashed out for €440,000, or $484,000.

Bilic and Farrell played heads-up for almost $100,000 after the deal was made, ensuring the action was competitive. According to PokerNews, “The two started out almost even and the chip lead shifted a couple times before Farrell won a couple medium pots in a row and distanced himself from Bilic.”

The action ended on hand #100 of the final table, but the defining moment came two hands before that. Farrell shoved all-in with 7-6 on a board of A-10-A-8-X for complete air. Farrell bet the flop and turn before shoving the river and Bilic got out of the way despite holding the best hand, as it turned out, with 8-7.

On hand #100, Bilic went all-in with 8-2 on a board of A-7-6-5-Q and Farrell looked him up with 6-5 for two pair and the EPT Malta Main Event title. Here’s how the final six cashed out:

1. Niall firaldoFarrell – €534,300
2. Alen lilachaaBilic – €440,000
3. Jaroslaw Sikora – €265,840
4. Giulio Spampinato – €203,640
5. Rainer Kempe – €161,340
6. Sam Pudge714 Greenwood – €125,660

Farrell calls Scotland home and has $2.4 million in career online tournament winnings, 10% of which came after taking down the FTOPS Main Event last year. He is only the second player from Scotland ever to win an EPT Main Event. Farrell also has victories online in the PartyPoker$200K Guaranteed Sunday and PokerStars Sunday $109 Rebuy, just to name a few. He has $1.3 million in live tournament winnings, according to the Hendon Mob.

Farrell told EPT officials after his win, “It feels incredible. I ran so pure the last two days. When we got to heads-up, I got good cards, but there was one big bluff I made which felt like a momentum-swinger. Bilic is a really good player. I’ve played a lot online with him. He played really tough.”

Bilic (pictured) was ranked as high as #7 worldwide on PocketFives in 2014 and is the top-ranked player in Bosnia and Herzegovina. He just hit $2 million in career online scores and won the Sunday 500 in 2014 for $79,000, his largest tracked cash to date. EPT Malta was easily his largest live score ever. Bilic was the chip leader entering the final six in Malta at 7.6 million, with Farrell in second place at 5.1 million.

Incredibly, Bilic is only the fourth player from Bosnia and Herzegovina ever to cash in an EPT Main Event and the first to make a final table. He told EPT staff that it was his first time ever playing heads-up live.

Congrats to Farrell and Bilic on going 1-2.
