On Monday night, the Main Event of the 2008 PokerStars World Championship of Online Poker drew to a close. A win by ckingusc meant that PocketFivers banked another $1.2 million from final tables in the world’s largest online tournament series. All told, PocketFivers won 13 of the 33 events of the WCOOP, taking home $9.8 million, about one-third of the overall guaranteed prize pool of $30 million. The past two weeks have seen PocketFivers vault into the poker spotlight, winning 40% of the tournaments offered. Let’s head to the virtual felts of PokerStars and relive the previous two weeks one last time.
In Event #3 of the 2008 WCOOP, _cwp394_ took down the $215 Limit Holdem tournament, besting a field of 2,258 entrants en route to a $73,385 payday. The New York native added another $7,100 to his bankroll by finishing third in the $162 buy-in $75K Weekly Tournament on Absolute Poker a few days later. Other PocketFivers who reached the final table of Event #3 included number1pen and lucky_aces08. The trio combined for over $130,000 in total earnings.
PocketFivers went 1-2-3-4-5 in Event #5, a $10,300 buy-in No Limit Hold’em tournament. At the end of the day, dorinvandy stood above the rest of the 321 player field, taking home $617,925 and defeating DuckU heads up. The runner up pocketed $459,030. In third place was number1pen, who made his second final table of the 2008 WCOOP, adding another $337,050 to his bankroll. Choron finished fourth for $256,800 and gbmantis landed in fifth, cashing for $179,760.
There was something good happening in Event 9, as PocketFiver SomethingGood barreled through a field of 3,290 entrants en route to a $95,410 payday. He was one of two Norwegian PocketFivers to make the final table that night; IFoldToAPush finished third and cashed for $36,190. The tournament guaranteed a prize pool of $400,000 and the actual prize pool swelled to $658,000.
Fresh off a win in the $150 buy-in, $65,000 Guarantee on Full Tilt Poker earlier in the month, Randers took down the $320 Mixed Holdem Six-Handed tournament, Event #12, for $73,603. Heads-up, he battled against fellow PocketFiver gotcha55, a.k.a. Aaron Kanter. The fourth place finisher in the 2005 World Series of Poker Main Event, Kanter banked $53,856 from his WCOOP showing. Also at the final table of Event #12 was jibbinghippo, who finished sixth.
In the $215 rebuy No Limit Hold’em tournament, Event #13, ankstrajks brought home $207,773 for the win. The Swedish native also finished second in the PokerStars Sunday Warm-Up at the end of August. Coming in fifth in Event #13 was imcastleman, who brought home $61,373 to the great state of Iowa. Finally, BeL0WaB0Ve made his first WCOOP final table and finished sixth for $48,587.
Two of the world’s top online poker players finished atop the leader board in the $215 Pot Limit Omaha Cubed event (#16). Andy McLEOD finished first and cashed for nearly $100,000. Isaac mr. menlo Baron finished second, pocketing $70,980. Baron has recorded wins in the PokerStars Sunday Million and Full Tilt Poker $750K Guarantee. He’s also logged multiple wins in the $100 rebuy on PokerStars. Many players answer “Menlo” when asked who the top online poker player is; he’s the same man who plays as WestmenloAA on Stars.
In the largest buy-in event held as part of the 2008 WCOOP, the $25,000 buy-in High Roller Heads-Up event culminated in a battle of PocketFivers, as stevesbets dueled with 2008 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure winner and PokerStars pro ElkY. In the end, stevesbets reeled in the shark, cashing for $560,000. ElkY pocketed $320,000 for second. The $1.6 million guaranteed tournament paid out to the final eight contestants remaining in this unique tournament.
Event #22 was a $530 buy-in Omaha High-Low Mixed tournament with a $200,000 guaranteed prize pool. Three days after taking down the Nightly Seventy Grand on PokerStars, buckiz6 was back with a vengeance, taking down the WCOOP event for $55,800. He’s already taken home over $82,000 in tournaments that are tracked for the PocketFives.com Online Poker Rankings this month.
Former number one ranked player shaundeeb took down Event #25, a $320 Pot Limit Omaha with rebuys tournament, pocketing $152,195. He also won Event #9 of the recently-completed Full Tilt Online Poker Series, cashing in that tournament for $115,000. In May, he won the Sunday Warm-Up for $102,542. Joining Deeb at the final table of this event were TheNew and online poker legend JohnnyBax.
Event #25 was the first of three straight events won by PocketFivers. In Event #26, a $320 No Limit Six-Handed tournament, the Netherlands’ own rubenrtv muscled through the 3,273 player field, cruising to a $152,195 payday. He won the Sunday Warm-Up in May for $112,945 and took fourth in the Sunday Million in July for $77,301. Germany’s HT-Max and WCOOP winner dorinvandy were also at the final table.
PocketFivers went 1-2 in Event #27, a $530 No Limit Hold’em Triple Shootout tournament. There were 729 entrants and outlasting them all was TheActionKid, who took it down for $76,545. He also cashed for $10,714 in Event #29. Maryland’s own SgtKyle finished in second place in this event for $51,030. Also making an appearance at the final table were ElkY and Wiscomurray.
PiKappRaider was the talk of the town in Event #29, pocketing $211,134 for his win in the $530 rebuy No Limit Hold’em Six-Handed event. Two weeks ago, he won the Full Tilt Poker $750K Guaranteed for $135,903. In August, he won the PokerStars $100 rebuy for $31,570. Joining him at the final table were DuckU (third for $119,748), grunter321 (fifth for $56,723), and Roothlus (sixth for $37,815). It was DuckU’s second WCOOP final table and second six-figure score.
Finally, South Carolina native ckingusc took down one of the largest prizes ever given out in online poker. He won the $5,200 buy-in WCOOP Main Event for $1,265,342. Number two ranked player AJKHoosier1 finished third, taking home a solid payday of $782,542. Other PocketFivers at the final table included Sumpas (sixth for $415,150), klslcz (seventh for $305,900), and kovi99 (ninth for $121,268). These five PocketFivers helped boost the total winnings by member of the online poker community to $9.8 million from WCOOP final tables.
