PocketFivers Gear Up For Record-Setting PokerStars Sunday Million[ return to main articles page ]

What would you do with a million dollars?

That question has penetrated the minds of online poker players everywhere with the PokerStars Sunday Million 5th Anniversary tournament just a couple days away. PokerStars has slapped a $5 million Guarantee to its $215 flagship event this Sunday along with a minimum of $1 million and a Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 to the winner.

The massive event, which gets underway at 4:30 p.m. ET on March 6, will need to reach 25,000 players to hit its guaranteed prize pool. That shouldn't be a problem considering last year's Fourth Anniversary of the Sunday Million attracted 36,169 participants with a $4 million Guarantee. In case you don't remember, PocketFives member Michael RichieRichZH Friedrich (pictured) took down that event for a payday of $1.1 million. It was the largest score ever for a poker player from Switzerland; the Zurich native told PocketFives after his win that it was a "dream come true."

As of Friday afternoon, nearly 7,000 players had registered for this weekend's Sunday Million. To put that in perspective, last week's event had 9,147 total players, with Denmark's "JustPushIt" winning it outright for $261,243. That prize could be surpassed by the fifth-place finisher of this week's special event (the fifth-place finisher of last year's record-setting Sunday Million, WNYCEC, took home $151,909).

So, seriously, what would you do if you won this weekend's Sunday Million? PocketFives member slapshot posed the question in the official poker discussion thread on Wednesday: "What would you do? Quit your job? Keep doing what you're doing? 2 chicks at the same time? Invest? Do nothing?"

Several PocketFivers voiced responses, both serious and lighthearted in nature, but nearly all were entertaining. Three-time PocketFives Triple Crown winner MakeMeMaster was the first to chime in: "Never ever play online poker again." Several others agreed, while many joked about blowing their newfound fortune on a party binge. One poster, dpitts06, said he would "blow it all being a 'winner' with Charlie Sheen!"

Apology7 (pictured), another Triple Crown winner, added some sensibility to the thread, saying, "(I would) invest most and stress a little less about the future of online poker. Cut down my volume and travel a little more. 600k after taxes is a decent chunk of change but some of you guys are acting like you'll be able to sit on the beach sipping mi ties the rest of your life. lolz."

More poker pros joined the thread, including 29th-ranked Jon apestyles Van Fleet, who said, "Probably wouldn't change much. I'd buy a house probably but I'm trying to be set for life. I'ma keep grinding until I got enough money in the bank to live off of interest."

In a separates thread, players were asked what they believed the total prize pool would be for Sunday's special event. PocketFives member Body Spill believed the tournament would exceed the total of $7.2 million from last year, and the replies seemed to be evenly split. One poster suggested that the event would have an overlay, to which another member stated "will NOT happen." This writer strongly agrees.

For those that don't want to pony up the $215 buy-in, PokerStars is offering a variety of satellites to this weekend's Sunday Million 5th Anniversary tournament for as little as $1. There is also a special $11 super satellite that will get underway at 3:30 p.m. ET on Sunday that guarantees 1,000 seats into the event.

Best of luck to all PocketFivers this weekend!
