From the very beginning I knew there were great things in store for the Pocketfives community. When I first signed up for an account in February of 2005 I went back to read almost every thread up to that point. That's right, all 30 pages of Poker Discussion. Today, a similar enterprise might take you years. The growth of our community makes Pocketfives what it is today, but I have to give credit where credit is due. Cal, Adam and Riley took a chance and built this site from the ground up. As Pocketfives transitions into a new era with more features, more resources, and more promotions than ever before, I am glad to be a part of the fun. <READMORE>This time last year we were gearing up for the World Series Main event and the launch of PocketfivesLive. This year we have had reporters there from the beginning of the Series with in-depth blogs covering each and every event. Wein and Michael B have done a fantastic job in Vegas and Court has continued to deliver top notch reporting wherever he goes.
PocketfivesLive is a truly unique outlet because our goal is to simultaneously provide up to the minute reports of tournament action involving chip leaders and big name players as well as coverage of any Pocketfiver who takes the time to register with us prior to an event. An event as large as the WSOP makes covering every Pocketfiver impossible, especially with limited media access, but the coverage this year has been stellar. Nowhere else in the world can you find coverage like this from Day 1a of the WSOP: Freerolling
PocketfviesLive is not the only area of the site to benefit from the growth of the community. We have been steadily adding features all along, but the pace has picked up considerably in the past year. It’s hard to believe it’s been only nine months since the release of the rankings data. Since then players who were not even on our radar have rocketed to the top of the charts. I am sure *WhotheHell* would have eventually come to our attention under the old system, but in the age of automated rankings results speak for themselves. Anyone, anywhere in the world can find their name listed among the elite players of online poker.
Speaking of anywhere in the world, if you haven’t browsed the new international and regional rankings I highly suggest you give them a look.Whether you’re from Athens, Georgia or Athens, Greece there is a new way for you to gauge your success, challenge your buddies, or just enjoy seeing your name up in lights. At the end of the day, we play this game to win money, but having a place like Pocketfives to come to share the experience, relax, and make friends sure makes it a lot more fun.
It is currently not that difficult to become the number one ranked player in Argentina, but don’t tell Pocketfiver Burdo that. No matter what happens from here on out, he can always claim to have held that title. Seriously though, there are some fascinating leaderboards out there like Brazil, Sweden, Norway, Canada, not to mention Florida, New York, or Illinois. As the ranks of Pocketfivers continue to swell, these leaderboards will become more and more competitive, generating more stories, more excitement and more online poker superstars.
As I am writing this, the main event of the World Series of Poker is down to 36 players with three known Pocketfivers still in, while across town two of online poker’s best are at the final table of the Bellagio Cup Main event with 60% of the chips in play between them. Two and a half years ago Pocketfives launched as a place for online poker players to come together to support each other, learn from each other and enjoy the game together. From those humble, yet noble beginnings we have grown into a community of tens of thousands registered members. Our goals are the same as they were then, now we just have more toys to play with. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.
