The latest addition to the distinguished Triple Crown wall of fame is Chris “moorman1” Moorman of Colchester, England. He is a recent graduate of Essex University, where he majored in Economics and minored in poker, or perhaps it was the other way around. Being in Europe, he still has a full slate of sites and tourneys to choose from when it comes to completing a Triple Crown. Nevertheless, winning 3 10k+ prizepool NHLE tourneys in one week is never easy and always impressive. Moorman1 took down the $30 rebuy on Full Tilt on Thursday 3/1, the Party 18k guaranteed on Monday 3/5, and the 12.5k gtd on Paradise on Wednesday 3/7. <READMORE>The lust for the coveted Crown was sparked last week when Moorman1 took down the 15k on Party on Tuesday 2/28 and followed that with the Full Tilt $30r&a on Thursday. Moorman "put in a huge effort" on Monday night, which was his last shot at the Crown at that point. He said this of his frenzy to get the third win, "I was playing every tourney going on stars, UB, and Bodog. I got close in a few but didn't quite manage to finish them off." Almost as an afterthought he won the Party 18k that night which gave him three more days to try again.
At that point moorman1 decided to change things up a bit and redeposit on Paradise in order to try to make that the third leg of the Triple crown. Two days later the 12.5 guaranteed, another five figure cash, and the Triple Crown were his. This Triple Crown totaled almost $14,000, which isn’t as big as some of the eye-popping Sunday scores we see each week, but the daily tourneys are the bread and butter of the poker pros.
Moorman1 was most proud of his win in the Full Tilt Rebuy. He came into the final table with an average to short stack and he was seated right in between Roothlus and Busto_Soon, who each had double his stack. Not an enviable position to be in, by any means. Moorman stayed alive by executing a few key resteals from the very active Busto_Soon on his right. Once he had a stack he was able to mix it up a bit more and ended up three handed with Roothlus and another player. That’s when lightning struck.
Moorman had AK on the button and raised it up normally and Roothlus pushed in with A8. The big blind woke up with QQ and called the first push, and with all the money in the middle, Moorman called. It all happened so fast Moorman1 can't remember if he hit his K or one of the two remaining aces, but it was enough for a clean sweep and end the whole thing in one hand.
Chris Moorman picked up poker near the end of his College career in the Fall of 2005 when his buddies started playing online. They stuck mainly to free rolls, and so did he until he until he “lucked” his way into second place of a freeroll that paid out $75. He ran that score up to $300 playing cash games, and then quickly ran it back down again to $25. Moorman1 put his last $25 into one sitngo with no intention of depositing if he lost. As luck, or fate, or maybe a little raw talent would have it he won that sitngo. Chris took his $125 to micro stakes cash games and practiced very strict bankroll management from that point forward.
Aside from these MTT wins, moorman1 has been on fire in the sattelites. He took one of five WSOP main event seats in the Full Tilt 1k Mega Sattelite, and also just qualified for the Irish Open. These won't be his first live tourneys, as he played in the WSOP ME last summer, but he is determined to improve on that performance.
"I made a huge error at the end of day one, so I really want to put that right this year.”
Moorman1 is not satisfied with just the one WSOP package win. He plans to continue to play the Full Tilt mega-satellite and others in order to accumulate buy-ins for preliminary events. Another 12k package would allow him to play in the 5k 6max event, as well as some of the smaller 1.5ks. He hopes that his experience playing 6 handed cash games will serve him well in a NLHE 6 max format.
The poker felt is not the only arena Chris Moorman has had success in. He is actually quite the talented pool player as well. He captained his University billiards team to the UK National Championship in his Senior year. He still plays competitively in tournaments, but the prize money is nothing compared to poker.
Chris Moorman is a force to be reckoned with as he has charged to the top of the ranks among online tournament players in a very short time. He only began devoting his full attention to MTTs at the end of 2006, and he has already broken into the top 100 of ranked players. With the Irish Open and the World Series of Poker seats in hand, Moorman1 will be looking to take his online success live, and Pocketfives wishes him the best of luck.
