So what does it take to become a rake racing powerhouse? PocketFives.com sat down with Murphy to find out.Murphy also dominated a points race held on Cake Poker that ran in April and is currently ongoing in May. On what games he enjoys playing, Murphy told PocketFives.com, “The games don’t run as often as they used to, but I play anywhere from $2/$4 to $5/$10 No Limit Hold’em. Last month, I played a lot of $1/$2. I play between 16 and 24 tables at a time. I also played some Pot Limit Omaha, but I don’t mix it up very often.” Murphy added that he normally 12-tables Pot Limit Omaha when the game is on his agenda.
Cake Poker aggressively marketed its points races in April. In May, the USA-friendly site is doling out $25,000 per week as part of its $150,000 Points Race. Also up for grabs is $50,000 as part of a monthly points leaderboard. Point multipliers that increase as the month wears on allow latecomers to be able to compete on semi-equal footing. Murphy explained, “The Cake Network doubles and triples my hourly rate just because of all of the promotions they have. I’d rather play on PokerStars or Full Tilt Poker, but it doesn’t make any sense given all of Cake’s races.”Pocketing money from rakeback, rake races, points races, and general game play can help any player right the ship financially. For Murphy, these extra incentives have offset poor performance at the tables: “I’m thankful for it because in 2010, I think I’m 50 or 60 buy-ins below expectations in terms of all-in EV.
