The World Championship of Online Poker certainly shook up the PocketFives Rankings

The PokerStars World Championship of Online Poker always has an impact on the PocketFives Rankings, but to say the final week changed the fortunes of a few of the top-ranked players would be an understatement. Joao Mathias ‘joaomathias’ Baumgarten managed to hang on to the top spot but WCOOP Leaderboard winner Fabrizio ‘SixthSenSe19’ Gonzalez broke into the top 10 and is hot on Baumgarten’s heels.

Baumgarten added 695.55 points to his total thanks to a third place finish in WCOOP Event #60, the $2,100 buy-in Super Tuesday Special Edition. He also walked away with $163,807, but he wasn’t done there. On Sunday the Brazilian grinder put up a fifth place finish in the PokerStars Sunday Grand for $27,310 and 272.96 points.

Those additional points proved to be useful as Gonzalez had a strong week. The Uruguayan had five of his 17 cashes last week count towards his PLB score. He started the week off with a fourth place finish in WCOOP Event #59 for $38,755 and 366.1 points. The next day he cashed in both WCOOP Event #62 and #63 for a total of $18,508 and 328.32 points. He then posted a runner-up finish in the $21,000 buy-in WCOOP Pot Limit Omaha High Roller event, earning $355,731 and 910.96 points. He wrapped up his big week with another runner-up finish, this time in the PokerStars Saturday Scuffle for $8,447/177.03 and a 16th place finish in the WCOOP Wrap-Up for $8,671/210.89.

Gonzalez’s move into the top 10 was certainly impressive and placed him just 326.86 points behind Baumgarten, but his big jump was actually overshadowed by a former #1-ranked player making an appearance in the top 10 after not being in the top 100 just a week ago.

Patrick ‘pleno1’ Leonard, who had two short stints at #1 back in 2014, jumped from #101 all the way up to #7 and not surprisingly it was success in WCOOP that propelled him there.

Leonard made the final table of the partypoker Powerfest High Roller on September 20 to earned $2,723 and 9.36 points for the first of his five qualifying cashes. The second one was the biggest, though. Leonard topped a 1,605-entry field to win WCOOP Event #65 for $162,054.98 and a massive 1,033.11 points. His next two qualifying cashes came in partypoker Powerfest event and totaled $15,248/272.5. He then final tabled WCOOP Event #77, finishing fourth for $87,804 and 605.2 points. All told, Leonard added 2,000.97 points to his total and now sits just 1,285.65 points out of taking over the top spot for the third time in his career.

With Gonzalez and Leonard both entering the top 10 this week, two players were forced out. Jonatan ‘Pot4teUS’ Hellman fell from #8 to #15 and Aleksandr ‘NoPlanB’ Mordvinov dropped from #10 to #14.
