In the midst of the Full Tilt Online Poker Series as well as some big promotions by PocketFives for its members, two PocketFivers have upped the ante by winning the Triple Crown. Mark “dipthrong” Herm took down the Triple Crown on Monday and Tuesday. Not to be outdone, Scott “SCTrojans” Freeman, fresh off final tabling Sunday majors on back to back weeks, also took home a Triple Crown. Some of the biggest names in online poker – TheWacoKidd, Annette_15, and mattg1983, just to name a few – have won this prestigious award. PocketFives sat down with Herm and Freeman to discuss their latest accomplishment.
Herm started the Triple Crown by winning the UltimateBet $109, $11,000 Guaranteed tournament for $2,970. On Monday, two more tournaments were there for the taking – the $8,000 Guaranteed, $30 rebuy on Full Tilt Poker and the $11 rebuy on PokerStars. His PokerStars win was worth $12,123 and Full Tilt netted him $2,859. Despite the fact that seven days are allowed to win the Triple Crown, Herm only needed two. He comments, “After I won the UB tourney, I decided I was going to go for it. I haven’t been playing many MTT’s recently since this week. I’ve been grinding mostly at SNG’s, so it was good to switch up.” The toughest tournament for Herm to take down was the $11 rebuy on PokerStars, which took over seven hours to finish. He entered the final table with a massive chip lead: “You can play super aggressive and get away with it.”On what winning the Triple Crown means to Herm, who has experienced a ton of success in online poker: “It definitely is a great accomplishment for me. I’ve been really close a few times to winning the Triple Crown and came up short. It was a great feeling.” He’s headed out to the World Series of Poker in the next few weeks and will be re-investing his winnings for tournament buy ins. He’ll be staying with bigdogpckt5s. He appreciates the widespread support from his fellow PocketFivers: “I’ve had a ton of PM’s and posts from guys I respect on here and it really means a lot.”
Freeman took down the $20 rebuy on PokerStars on Sunday and turned around and captured the second leg of the Triple Crown on Monday in the $10 rebuy on Full Tilt Poker. While much of the PocketFives community was focused on the FTOPS Main Event Seat blowout on Wednesday, Freeman’s attention turned to UltimateBet, where he won the $100 buy in, $14,000 Guaranteed. His wins combined for over $17,000. Freeman comments on his Triple Crown win: “After school ended, I had three months for summer. I told myself I wanted to win a Triple Crown considering I could play a full schedule almost every day. I ended up winning it in two weeks. It was a grind.” Other than receiving a Triple Crown logo in his profile, he also is full of pride: “People that are number one and number two in my Pro Poll and #1PEN don’t have it.”His tournament schedule will get a little calmer over the next few months after the grind to get his Triple Crown. Freeman recently won Full Tilt majors on back to back weeks: “I've been running well for a few weeks now.” The $20 rebuy on PokerStars proved to be the most difficult to win: “I had to get lucky a few times.” His goal has been to be ranked and, on the strength of his recent successes, it is definitely on the way. He’s in the top 20 of the monthly PLB.
We wish these two up and coming PocketFivers the best of luck in the future and congratulate them again on their Triple Crown successes. For more information, check out the Triple Crown Wall of Champions.
