Last weekend, Jared
soxnation83 Mahoney brought home the gold in the
UltimateBet $200,000 Guaranteed for the second time. He first captured victory in the Sunday major back in September. Eight months later, he was up to his winning ways once again. The PocketFiver from Massachusetts banked $44,000 for his efforts, enough to buy a few new fish to round out his 72 gallon saltwater aquarium. In March, Mahoney took home a “W” in the $500 buy-in $100,000 Guaranteed on the same online poker site for $30,000. We virtually sat down with Mahoney to review his success on the Tokwiro-owned room.

His two victories in the Ultimate Bet $200,000 Guaranteed were worth a combined $90,000. On how this go-around compared with his first title eight months ago, Mahoney told PocketFives.com, “Last year when I won it the first time, I was getting coaching from my friend Greg
DuckU Hobson (pictured at left), who helped my tournament game greatly because I used to only concentrate on cash games. This time, I felt like I had great control over the final table. Once I became chip leader with a big suckout, I felt like it was my tournament to lose. Overall, my confidence was much higher the second time around.” Hobson’s tutoring had paid off big time. What else do you expect from a man who took second in a $10,000 buy-in No Limit Hold’em tournament during the
PokerStars World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) for nearly $500,000?
You can regularly find Mahoney playing in tournaments every Sunday, although his appearances on other days of the week are few and far between. He explained, “Now I feel as though I am a contender to win some tournaments and make many deep runs compared to last year. I have been really concentrating on improving my game and correcting a lot of the mistakes I was making.” In February, Mahoney grabbed second in the $150 rebuy on
Full Tilt Poker for $52,000. He final tabled a $162 buy-in Spring Championship of Online Poker (SCOOP) tournament in April for $21,000 and banked $38,000 in tournaments that are tracked for the
Online Poker Rankings last month.

Like many PocketFivers, Mahoney was turned onto poker shortly after a Tennessee accountant that you may have heard of defeated Sammy Farha in the Main Event of the 2003 World Series of Poker (WSOP). The Chris Moneymaker (pictured at right) tidal wave rippled all the way to Massachusetts, where Mahoney began competing in home games. He recalled, “I immediately was the one winning all of the money and quickly decided to try my skills online. I had a good amount of success in smaller cash games, but like every poker player, had a learning curve with bankroll management. Once I became more aware of my bankroll management, it allowed me to take my game to the next level.” Mahoney finished 16th in a €1,000 buy-in No Limit Hold'em tournament held during the European Poker Tour (EPT) Monte Carlo Grand Final last April and landed in 40th in the 2008 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure; the latter in the money finish was worth $32,000.

In addition to the Main Event, he’ll be heading to Sin City shortly to play in the majority of the $1,500 and $2,500 buy-in No Limit Hold’em tournaments. He’s also contemplating playing in the $10,000 buy-in World Championship of Heads-Up No Limit Hold’em. On the latter tournament, Mahoney admitted, “I have never played in a live heads-up event, so I am not sure how well I would adjust compared to online. Although I would love to play against Phil Ivey or Tom
durrrr Dwan (pictured at left) for fun, in a $10,000 live event, I might feel intimidated and get run over.” The heads-up event starts on June 13th and runs for three days.
Now it’s time to talk about the aquarium. When we spoke to Mahoney, he was in the midst of explaining to someone how to care for his massive 72 gallon saltwater tank. It has a coral reef theme and is home to a potpourri of sea-faring creatures including clown fish, blue hippo, yellow tang, gobbies, angelfish, tilefish, crabs, shrimp, and starfish. He candidly admitted, “This is a learning experience until I get another tank with lionfish and puffers.” One can only hope that his aquatic friends remain intact during the seven week tournament series. In the meantime, you can find Mahoney staying at the Rio and Palms. The former is, of course, the home of the annual WSOP.
