Watch “The Sound of Music,” which is set in Austria, if the title of this article is confusing. On January 11, a little more than a week into the new year, Austria’s neverfoldQ5(pictured) took down a $33 No Limit Hold’em Cap tournament on PokerStars. He scooped $2,800 and, perhaps more importantly, registered the first leg of a PocketFives Triple Crown.

One day later, he was back at it, this time on the EU-facing site Winamax, where he won a W Series event for a healthy $44,000. On the 13th, he won the 888 Poker Hurricane, although the tournament didn’t qualify for the Triple Crown since its prize pool failed to reach $10,000. Still, he brought home another $2,400 in cash.

His Triple Crown quest was finally complete with a victory in the PokerStars.fr Hot €30 on January 14. “I felt pretty good about it,” neverfoldQ5 told PocketFives in an exclusive interview. “It was a good start to the new year.” Moreover, he is up to over 2,000 online poker cashes that total $821,000.

Which of the three tournaments was the toughest to get through and why? Or was winning a Triple Crown a breeze all-around? “All three tournaments were not what I would consider super tough,” he said. “The highest percentage of good players probably was in the $33 Cap. The hardest to win, though, was the Winamax event because of the field size.” That tournament had 1,440 entrants and its prize pool nearly hit a quarter-of-a-million dollars.

neverfoldQ5 got started in poker in 2006 as a “donator.” He said, “I always wanted to make it as a pro some day. Then, I met some really good players who helped me improve my game. I liked the mixture of math, psychology, and degening.” He plays full-time now despite quitting the game for six months at one point while focusing on studying and working as a waiter. He explained, “I got sick of that pretty quickly, so I got back into the game more disciplined than before. And since then, it has worked out way better.”

The Winamax W Series tournament was his largest tracked cash to date at $44,000, besting his second largest cash by a factor of four. He is #267 worldwide in the PocketFives Rankings, off his all-time high by five spots, and is #13 in Austria.

Speaking of Austria, we asked neverfoldQ5 about the poker scene in his home country. He responded, “In Vienna, poker is really big. Lots of good players I know live there. Here in Karnten(pictured), it’s definitely not as big, but Karnten is really nice. There are lots of lakes around here and it has beautiful scenery, so it’s the perfect spot for me to live, at least for a few more years.” There are 269 PocketFivers with PLB scores from Austria.

When he’s not grinding online, neverfoldQ5 is a big fan of the German sports club Werder Bremen. “I try to make it to some of their games every year,” he said with a smile, “even though it’s not easy to get to from Austria. Besides that and poker, it’s basically sleeping and eating for me. I really enjoy every day.”
