I have to admit, I was not familiar with the name dmmikkel before he posted about his Triple Crown win. Apparently this guy has absolutely been killing it for a long time now, but he is much better known in the Sit and Go world than that of Multitable tournaments. That is until Annette_15 said she didn’t think he could go from number 483 to Top 20 on the Pocketfives Leader Board in under three months. Everyone likes a good challenge, and Dag Martin Mikkelsen has never been one to shy away from one. The challenge began on January 22, and dmmikkel has 80 more days to climb at least 463 spots on the sliding leaderboard. This should be fun to watch! <READMORE>Mikkelsen’s Triple Crown wins were on Full Tilt, PartyPoker and UltimateBet. The first came in the Full Tilt 6 handed $109 and the second in the $162 on PartyPoker. He and TheWacoKidd made an even chop of the Full Tilt tourney and just played it out for the PLBs. For the third leg, dmmikkel had Paradise, Bodog, and UltimateBet to choose from. Just one day after his party win he found himself at the final table of two eligible tournaments, the UB $30 rebuy and the $132 bounty tournament. In the rebuy AQ sooted shot down his QQ, leaving him with the bounty for the Crown. He had been chip leader, or “chippy” as he calls it, most of the way and was straight up abusing the final table. Only one player was playing back at him at all.
“I was raising probably 30-40% of my hands, and reraising a lot too. We were 6 or 7 handed and one guy kept repopping me. He was probably the only one at the table that was on to me. So when I raised under the gun with 10-9o and he came over the top I finally got fed up. When it came back around to me I pushed within 1-2 seconds. He folded and after that it got even easier. I probably raised 50% of my hands. They were just handing me chips.”
There was one minor bump in the road to victory when dmmikkel lost the chip lead three handed, but he easily chip backed up simply by continuing his aggression unopposed. He won the tourney and the Triple Crown… and five minutes later the lights went out. This actually came as no surprise, as it was a scheduled maintenance on his building, but he had been racing against the clock for the last 45 minutes. He was prepared to make a mad dash for his Mom’s house, but luckily the power went off 30 minutes later than scheduled and he was able to play it out.
Although this challenge puts a new emphasis on MTTs, dmmikkel is no stranger to the game. He has been playing poker with his family his whole life and online poker for the past two years. Like most online players he started at the micro levels, but unlike most he has never gone bust. His first deposit was for $100 and it has been a steady grind upwards ever since. “I’m a lot tighter on bankroll management than most pros,” dmmikkel said of his approach to the game. He has also had a good bit of MTT success prior to this, final tabling both the Party and Stars Million last year. His true claim to fame is Sit and Gos, for which he has been listed among the top ten players online!
He may be cautious with his money, but there is nothing conservative about Mikkelsen’s play. He is very, very aggressive and a master of multitabling. He is used to playing a lot of games, but he has stepped up his volume even more for this challenge. This past Sunday he played 27 multitable tournaments, but don’t worry he says, “I don’t think I was ever in more than 12 at once.” That may sound crazy to the average player, but it helps when you have a nice setup:

Here is what it looks like during what he calls “rush hour” :

You can follow dmmikkel’s progress in his PLB Challenge right here at Pocketfives and also on his blog at dmmikkel.com. We wish him continued success in his quest to climb the Pocketfives Leader Board and if his results continue on this pace top 20 will be a cinch. Watch out Annette, you’ve got a fellow Norwegian gunning for you now!
