You read that headline right. A leaked report on Friday indicated that the 2014 World Series of Poker Main Event could guarantee $10 million to first place. If it’s true, it would be the second largest top prize given out in WSOP history, trailing only Jamie Gold’s $12 million haul in 2006.

A schedule for this year’s series was temporarily published at WSOP.com/2014 and showed that the WSOP Main Event would start on July 5 with the first of three Day 1s. In parenthesis next to “Day 1A,” “Day 1B,” and “Day 1C’ was a note that read, “$10 million 1st Place Prize.” The website has since been taken down; trying to access WSOP.com/2014 now yields a “Forbidden” message.

Caesars Interactive Entertainment Vice President Seth Palansky told iGaming on Friday, “Nothing is finalized yet. We’re still working through some things on the schedule and nothing should be taken as final.”

Speculation as to whether the $10 million guarantee would create some hubbub if it’s indeed part of the final WSOP schedule, one poster on Two Plus Two wrote, “I think guaranteeing the 1st place prize is a great idea. They saw the success of the Millionaire Maker and used the same concept. Even though it’s a $10K event, I think this will bring in more players who otherwise would not have played.”

The so-called Millionaire Maker, which guaranteed $1 million to first place, took place last year and had a $1,500 buy-in. Over 6,300 players turned out for it, creating a parking shortage and stretching the Rio’s capacity to the limits. The Millionaire Maker broke a variety of records including the largest re-entry field, most unique entrants for a WSOP event, and largest non-Main Event field. A WSOP press release has confirmed that the Millionaire Maker will run once again this year, starting on May 31. Its registration line from last year is pictured.

One poster harkened back to another marketing angle from WSOP officials: “A few years ago when they wanted to guarantee that 9th place got $1M, they basically just took the extra money away from the spots around it in the payout ladder, which made some of the bubble decisions a little weird equity-wise. But, whatever, anyone who gets to that point will be happy to deal with it.”

Also on deck for this year, according to iGaming, is the first ever Dealer’s Choice bracelet, although that tournament was not shown on the leaked screen shot.

As noted in a previous feature article here on PocketFives, the 2014 WSOP will begin on May 27 and conclude on July 14. The leaked schedule reportedly showed 65 bracelet events, although the final number remains to be seen, and poker players in New Jersey and Nevada can qualify for events online on WSOP.com. The official 2014 WSOP schedule should be released in the near future.
