Sara Hall was the executioner of Phil Hellmuth’s 2016 WSOP Main Event dreams

Sara Hall isn’t just some amateur taking a shot at the 2016 World Series of Poker Main Event. She’s an accomplished player, having won a WSOP Circuit ring and she most recently got close to winning Casino Champion at the Circuit stop at Horseshoe Baltimore.

On Thursday however, she found herself in a spot many players, amateur and pro alike, would love to be in.

Playing Day 3 of the Main Event with a chance to bust Phil Hellmuth from the one event he loves more than almost anything else.

Hellmuth began Day 3 with 82,300, a little more than half of the average of 155,000. He initially found himself at a table with former Main Event runner-up Martin Staszko on his immediate left. Hellmuth eventually found himself in ‘poker brat’ mode and after one hand against Staszko, launched his phone some 15 feet in the air. Not long after that Hellmuth’s table broke and he was moved to Hall’s table and seated to the right of her.

When Hellmuth sat down, Hall texted her husband to let her know the 14-time bracelet winner was now at her table.

“I told my husband ‘Phil Hellmuth just got moved to my table’ and he said, ‘I just told your mom I had a dream you knocked him out’ and I said ‘I tried he folded, last hand before break’,” said Hall, whose mom was also watching from the rail.

Not long after coming back from the break, Hall looked down at JdJs. With blinds of 1,500/3,000, the UTG player raised to 8,000. Hellmuth moved all in for his last 32,000 and Hall made it 60,000. Everybody folded, leaving Hall heads-up with Hellmuth. Hellmuth showed AdJh and could only watch as the board ran out 9s6d4h4sKd and Hellmuth was eliminated but for those expecting fireworks, Hall has bad news.

“No, no dramatics at all – probably because he got his money in bad. Had it been a flip, there would have been dramatics,” said Hall, who quickly passed word back to her husband. “I texted him ‘busted him!’.”

While he avoided any TV-worthy meltdown, Hellmuth took to Twitter to express his disappointment with being out of the Main Event.

She then sent one more follow up text to her husband, just in case.

“I told him to go back to sleep and have a dream I make the final table, please,” said Hall.
