Young Guns Look for Success in WSOP Europe[ return to main articles page ]

On July 17, Jerry Yang defeated a field of 6,358 people to stake his place in poker glory, cashing for $8.25 million. Poker players from all walks of life and from all over the world made their way to Sin City to battle it out in the two week Main Event of the 2007 World Series of Poker. Now, all eyes will turn eastward to London, England, site of the 2007 World Series of Poker Europe. The Main Event, a 10,000 Pound buy in tournament, kicked off Monday, September 10th for six days. Included in those playing are poker pros Phil Hellmuth, Phil Ivey, Doyle Brunson, Allen Cunningham, and Jamie Gold. Don’t worry, PocketFives is there too. Several prominent PocketFivers have made the trip as well, including Annette_15, mr. menlo, SowersUNCC, Imper1um, and AK87. The entire Main Event will be covered on PocketFivesLive.com.

This is the third of three events at the 2007 WSOP Europe. Thomas Bihl took down the first event, a 105 players entered the 2,000 Pound tournament.

PocketFivesLive.com Tournament Reporter Court Harrington brings us up to speed on some of the PocketFivers making the trip to jolly old England. “Annette_15 is one of the elite players in the online world and has been limited in what live tournaments she can play due to her age. With the WSOP Europe allowing participants as young as 18 years old, Annette will get a chance to show her skills in the live realm before she turns 21 and can start hitting the stops in the United States.” The age factor will be heavily tested in the WSOP Europe events.

Mr. Menlo will also be in attendance in Leicester Square: “Isaac, known online as mr. menlo or one of his variations on that theme, is also in the under 21 crowd and will be looking to take advantage of the opportunity to play in such a prestigious, high buy-in tournament that allows younger players.” Along the same lines, AK87 benefits from the 18 year old age requirement: “Alex Kim is always a threat and has earned the respect of his peers. He will be one of the under 21 crowd looking to make a splash in London.”

SowersUNCC, ranked 40th on PocketFives.com, had 13 top five cashes in August online and looks to take his confidence to the live poker felts. “The buzz around Sowers has been tremendous lately. I haven't had the chance to meet him in person yet and am looking forward to doing so in London and also getting to see his style of play firsthand.” The fleet of competitors at the WSOP Europe is resoundingly different from those found in U.S. World Poker Tour events, bringing a new edge to coverage on PocketFivesLive.com.

Imper1um has had a vast amount of success in European live tournaments and the World Series of Poker Europe Main Event promises to be no exception. Harrington comments, "Sorel has already earned the respect of the regulars on the circuit and was one of the most talked about players of the summer at the WSOP. For him, the inaugural WSOP Europe could be another notch in his belt on his way to poker immortality." Back in April, Imper1um chopped the Irish Poker Open for $600,000.

Each player starts with 20,000 chips and blinds begin at 50/100, escalating every two hours. There will be two Day Ones and the inaugural winner of the WSOP Europe Main Event will be crowned on Sunday, September 16. For all the action, visit PocketFivesLive.com.
