We all have our own paths as to how we got involved in poker. Some of us started playing poker on the kitchen table with family when we were little, such was my path for instance. Many people started gravitating towards the game after 2003 when Moneymaker and ESPN helped to change the poker landscape forever. There are even some of us who came to the game through another game. Table top gamers, magic the gathering players, and starcraft nerds (said lovingly of course) all have found their way to playing our beloved 52 card slug fest. To all those who are from the table top gamer background or to any of you who are interested in learning about it I have some interesting news. I will be heading to the most important 4 days of a table top gamer's life this week, Gen Con in Indianapolis, Indiana.
As some of you may know, along with playing poker I am an independent film maker and co-owner of Broken Wall Films LLC. Our award winning feature length film, Something Remote, will be screening at Gen Con Indy Friday night at 7:30PM. I'm really excited for the trip. The crew is driving down starting Tuesday night, and we're set to arrive in Indianapolis around noon on Wednesday. The convention officially runs Thursday through Sunday. For these 4 days we will be talking on movie panels, screening our film, and getting some general networking going. We also will be interviewing people of note at Gen Con for our podcast Open Lounge.
Alex, another co-owner of the company and director of Something Remote, and I started a podcast a few months ago titled Open Lounge (www.openloungecast.com). The two of us spend the first half hour of the show talking about film, from our experiences to Oscar winning pieces and everything in between. The second half, well that's when the booze kicks in and all bets are off. We bounce from topics like should there be a maximum age for strippers to homeless professors and then in the same breath talk about "public" masturbation. It's meant to be a comedy podcast and, in my totally unbiased opinion [;)], I think we're actually pretty good at what we do. We're taking the show on the road with us to Gen Con and will be putting up one or two updates per day of the trip. We're looking to interview fellow film makers, internet celebs like Felicia Day and Sandeep Parikh, and video game developers that flood the halls of Gen Con Indy. If anything there interests you, check us out at This amazing link and if you'll be at Gen Con, give us a shout and we'll try to get you on the show...seriously.
I'll be looking to grind by night and play filmmaker by day while out in Indy. This is going to be a hell of a trip. Let the drinking and debauchery begin!
