Girlfriend = -EV

I took sometime off to plan out my girlfriend's surprise birthday party. She's 22 now and we've been dating for 2 years. Pretty crazy how time flies. Giving up time for someone is tough. I want to grind poker like crazy everyday but I can't get the house ready and plan a party at the same time. Its really hard to imagine if I'd be making more money if I wasn't dating her or if I would be making less because having her to keep me extra happy is +EV. Who knows? Most likely, having a girl friend is worse for your poker career.

I love my girlfriend really much, so I doubt I'll break up with her over poker, though I've seriously thought about it. I just love playing poker so much I hate the fact that I have to give up my Saturdays so I can see her. I wish I could see her during a week day but she can't.

There is less distractions though. Before dating Nadia(girlfriend), I'd be trying to hit on a bunch of women on the internet while playing poker. Now, my distraction is having her message me or try and web cam with me during a session. She's calmed down a bit on doing that since I've been winning a lot more when she doesn't distracted me... Who would of known!?

Its really tough having a girlfriend... Like I've said in another blog, its hard to be accepted by their family when you say you are a poker player, not only that girls want stability. They want someone they don't have to worry about money with and see a future.

She still asks me every once and awhile what I'm going to do with my life, if I'm going to go back to school. We'll see... I'd like to run a business of some sort in the future with money I'll win from poker so I don't have to be grinding forever.

Giving up Sundays sucks when she asks to sleep over, and my sleep is all messed up... sigh...

I guess I shouldn't be complaining some people struggle with trying to find a good girl, or even with dating. To those people I just suggest you do some research on the subject. There's plenty of material on the internet, just make sure its legit. I've struggled in the past with women but I did the research and now I have no problems.

    1. it'll be even harder to get a session in when children arrive...believe me! lol GL dude
    2. LOL, I can imagine! How do you do it?
    3. It's tough, especially the 1st year (currently still in that stage). As I start my session I think to myself "ONE TIME!!!" without having to run an errand for at least 3hours. lol

congrats on your triple crown and GL in your sessions!
    4. how about if she finds ur post ?:D delete imo
    5. LOL why is everyone saying that!? Did I say anything wrong here? LOL I guess I should of said "I'll never break up with her over poker" instead of "I probably wouldn't break up"
    6. probably saying that you've 'seriously thought about' breaking up with her over poker is a bit of a mistake.
    7. haha oops, we've been dating a long time its all good :)
    8. I like you Masaki !!!
You ask yourself the correct questions and you go straight to the point. I am sure Nadia must love this in some kind of way, I'll say don't change !! ;-)

Dude, I have been facing this situation (of course not exactly the same) but 3 years ago when it was the time to ask myself "should I give myself 110% to poker ??". I tried a bit but the balance of my (ex-GF) was so necessary for me to stay in my good mindset that I was def playing worse when she was not in my life.. Being a pro is though, it is f*ç% tough and I am sure that a good balance (GF, sports, other "non-competitive" activties) are just the nuts.

When we begin to ask ourself those important questions, life become IMO a questions of balance and as Fox (chris Wallace for those that don't now him) said, playing poker is not natural, it appeal skills that we are naturally not used to do all the time so my feeling is that is like sport, balance is crucial.

Everyone is different and everyone changes, the Renrad1 is certainly "more able" than me for playing long sessions day after day like an old men can only 2 table twice a week and still stay in their balance.. There are many parameter in this "equation" but to finalize I am sure that finding our own balance is very important and I feel you proceed correctly.
    9. yeh, as long as u can balance it all, it's all good and really it depends on people. Like for myself i've had a gf since i was playing 10 cent sngs just for fun. now i do it for a living. The most important thing is to make them get that. Now even her parents think of what i do as a job. But yeah some people would never get how poker works etc, but some would. :)
      GL.
P.S. have had a gf for 3years, so maybe wait a year and it will change hah :)
    10. Well said guys! I love my gf so I can't break up with her over poker. Though it still sucks to give up the occasional Sunday for her... sigh...

Uh just wait to you have kids and a family to hold up. When youre at a Final Table and your child just throws up on the bed.
Or the wife is doing the laundry (yours) and says watch the kid for a second while I do the dryer and is gone for 10 minutes and
you hear a bang as the kid you were supposed to watch trips and falls while running at 20 miles an hour imitating Elmo.
Enjoy your life now. Wouldnt trade my kid for all the binks.
