Folding Pocket Aces Pre-Flop

By: pdubs2599
Published: Dec 10th, 2008
I recently took down a $2 dollar tourney on pokerstars for $647 and i folded pocket aces pre-flop once during the tourney. Here was the hand...I was 6th in chips and I believe there was 15 ppl left in the tourney. I was in Big Blind with AA. 1st position short stake went all-in. A mid stack re-raises all-in. Followed by another re-re-raise all-in, thus, putting me all-in. the action was on me and i decided to fold. the short stack had QJ suited, the mid stack had pocket 10s and the other guy who shoved had KQ suited.

I would have lost the hand to a set of 10s...

Even tho i did win the tournament...Was laying down AA the right play??

    1. Hindsight is 20-20. And it worked out for you. I have never folded Rockets pre-flop and probably never will. Unless it was some funky super satellite structure, where multiple players get an entry, I'm not folding Aces in any situation.

From the way you laid it out, you would have lost the main pot, but won a side pot from the guy with KQ, so you still would have had chips. I guess you can rationalize it that you are just a 55% favorite against the field.

But I still punish you for folding the best hand in hold'em. Your punishment -- 4 push-ups. I'd make you do more, but you are a poker player and probably can't.
    2. 4 pushs ups! done! haha

but ur saying i probably can't?? kinda harsh and completely untrue...but w/e

i just felt the need to fold b/c of how many ppl were in the pot and so close to the final table...i 100% call if its earlier in the tourney. i just felt it was a strategic fold trying to make the final table. it was the 1st time ive ever laid it down pre-flop but ive just seen so many bad beats on the internet that i just felt like i had to fold...ya know?
    3. I came close to folding pocket AA in a live tourney. 2 tables left with about 17 players. I was the big blind and 3 people in front of me went all in. I really had to give it some thought because I knew one of them would catch a set or two pair and cripple me. I called and the guy with pocket 10s caught his set, but four spades hit the board and I had A spades and won the hand. I came really close to folding though.
    4. Never fold AA preflop unless ur in a satty. U win those pots to win mtts or bust.
    5. Dont worry do what your minds says to do...I have folded aces twice so far..........

Once was in the bubble of a satty and I was almost Gtd a seat and the 2nd time when there were 4 crap all ins on the first hand of a 3 dollar DS...even though I would have won that hand by spiking an Ace on the river but I didnt like to gamble that time....and between I took down that Double Shootout.
    6. I doesn't matter that you might get sucked out on. Folding aces is soo bad on soo many levels here, its mind boggling. It is so bad that i have to ask, level??
    7. i sent a link to ur blog to everyone aim bc this post is so god awful, congrats, ur famous!
    8. I think it was a good play. Could go either way but you only have two outs possible to improve and against 3 other opponents in the hand you're barely a favorite against the ability for one of those three to improve with 5 cards to come. Basically you would have to be willing to roll the dice on holding up and since it was for your tourney life it is really a 50/50 call in my opinion. Anyone who says differently has too much money syndrome, their just a true gambler at heart, or a limited thinker who doesn't fully understand tournement strategy! Well played and congrats! Hard to argue with success...though some will still try! lol
    9. Quit poker if youre serious...or never play a tourney over $2. You may think I'm being a dick but there's really nothing more to say. No matter how much you study the game and how much effort you put in you'll never succeed at any decent stakes if you can't understand how bad folding AA is preflop...end of story - sorry to be the one that tells you this but its true.
    10. like previously stated folding AA pre is so incredibly bad its unreal. the only situation where it is ever profitable is in a sat. end of story. congrats on the win though

    11. I would never fold ACES unless it was a satellite tournament and we were really close and I had a seat locked.....that's happened a bunch of times (once I had to fold AA, KK, then AQss all in a row....had a commanding lead and the seats locked up)
    12. So ive been really thinking hard about this hand for a few days, and ive concluded that, in fact, you made an excellent laydown. You've got to take into consideration that "folding to win" in your best strategy in poker. If you dont bet, you cant lose. Its as simple as that. That being said, why play kk? Its a dead hand anyways. If anything, you should just limp/fold JJ+ unless you hit top set on a rainbow board with no connectors. Some of the best players in the world know that AA and KK are hands of the past. You have to play them very weak/tight otherwise you might just starting winning money. Good luck in life and poker,

      your pal, Swish
    13. I probably wouldn't have folded it, however I often play live limit holdem and can tell you first hand, AA vs. more than 2 people is really asking for it. AA is a monster heads up, but shrinks very quickly multi-way.

There's other factors to consider too, such as the possibility of someone else holding Ax, which kills your outs making it very difficult for you to improve and multi-way you want to be able to improve.

--- a better way to look at this from a theoretical standpoint is, if there's 3 or 4 players in a hand with me which hand would i want to battle them with.

I'd probably opt for 910-AK suited before I chose an AA. That's just me though.
    14. So Genetic are you seriously saying that if there was a 3 way in before it was your turn to act you would rather open your hand and look down at 9 10 suited

      You sir are an idiot
    15. oh and you had said u would rather AKs over AA that is a complete joke
    16. Poor guy. He honnestly announced that he layed down AA and he gets spanked for it lol!

Seriously, folding AA is a no no. If I had AA in front of me and even thought about folding it, I would question why I even play poker.

    17. Ive folded JJ, QQ KK preflop, and people thought all of those were bad laydowns after hearing the same kind of circumstances, a couple all ins ahead of me.

Poker, and more importantly people, are funny. You will find more people think a play you made was a bad play than a good play, no matter what you did.

This situation worked,(and that's always awesome right) So if it worked and you eventually won the tourney and you're happy, then it was the right play, so forget the haters and celebrate the win!

One question tho.. what if th buy-in was 100 and 1st was 100,000 same fold?
    18. No i do not think it is the same fold...taking 16th mite get me what?....2k maybe? i have no idea. taking out 3 players in that siutation would be good...but geting like 16 bucks or w/e it was....not worth my time or just not enough to buy me a new pair of shoes
    19. i seriously feel sorry for you
also i bet 5th spot didnt even pay 100bucks (your claiming to make a couple hundred just for making final)
Why do you play poker... to make decent cashes or to win tournaments?

Get your head right, quit making a fool of yourself
    20. I lose most of the time with pocket aces. As you know, with several players in the hand, the odds of winning with pocket aces is reduced dractically. Good job. Many players will go to hell with pocket aces.

Good luck and keep up the good work.

      mange
