Super High Me - Day 9 I caved!

By: Presto136
Published: Jun 8th, 2009
I caved. I smoked a bowl. I encourage everybody to send me a pm berating me for being a weak pos. In fairness to the experiment, I will not be playing poker during my stonedness. Instead I will babble on my blog about how much I truly love marijuana.

I was in a bad mood. I had been drinking all day to 'celebrate' my final table yesterday and the alcohol turned the mood from happy to bitter. The roommate casually handed me a bowl just like he would 9 days ago and I casually accepted. The mood instantly changed. The steamroller quickly filled up with smoke and I was brought back to the place that I have been at the past 5 years. Stoned. I do not feel less intelligent right now. In fact, I feel very in the zone. I am focused on the screen and everything else is insignificant.

I have a theory. Weed is a good tool for concentration. It is a very 'in the moment' drug and can enhance certain parts of the brain. It can also disable parts of the brain so it is definitely a give-take relationship. Weed is not a good tool for improving your game. If you are an unsuccessful player and are looking to plug your leaks, learn sober. However, if you are an accomplished poker player and have mastered the game, weed will put you in the moment. You will be locked in towards implementing your game to the best of your ability and you will do it confidently. If you lose, so what. It happens. You're going to lose 99% of the big tournaments you play so don't let it affect you. Weed helps to block out the financial part of the game and it helps you to focus on the actual poker.

I do not feel bad about smoking a bowl. I feel that it is irrelevant towards the poker part of the experiment. I talked with my roommate about it and he says that I should not set too high of standards for myself. That will only lead to stress. I will set standards for myself as far as character, religion, and relationships but I will not live my life based on 'false and unnecessary' standards.

I will continue to update the blog from the perspective of a sober poker player. This post will be my mulligan for the month and I will tee off again tomorrow.

    1. Hmmmmm,

      too bad.

I followed this experiment because Im really curious about the "none stoned" vs "stoned" HU results. Sadly I have to conclude this experiment failed...which is not necessarely a bad thing because many failed experiments show some nice side effects and deeper insights, so does this one.

You couldnt manage to go 30 days without using weed. How come?

First, the reason to smoke, "I was in a bad mood. I had been drinking all day to 'celebrate' my final table yesterday and the alcohol turned the mood from happy to bitter"

Second, the environment, "The roommate casually handed me a bowl just like he would 9 days ago and I casually accepted."

Third, here come all the excuses, "The mood instantly changed", "I do not feel less intelligent right now. In fact, I feel very in the zone. I am focused on the screen and everything else is insignificant".

This one almost made me laugh, "I have a theory. Weed is a good tool for concentration".

Fourth, hopefully this says more about your roommate than you, "I talked with my roommate about it and he says that I should not set too high of standards for myself. That will only lead to stress."

Too bad you didnt make it, maybe in a couple of years.

    2. The poker part of the experiment is still legit. I did not play any poker stoned and I will continue to play sober for the next 30 days.

The personal part of the experiment is a complete failure. I said I would go 30 days without smoking and I couldn't even make it 10.

      1. The reason is unjustified and definitely a weak excuse.

      2. The environment was a huge obstacle in this experiment. Being around potsmokers all the time broke me down.

      3. Those are are not excuses, They are simply side effects and how I was feeling at the moment. The theory paragraph is just a hypothesis for the actual effects of weed on your game

      4. I still like the roommate's advice. Even though he should have been more supportive and told me no, his advice is very insync with what my principles are.

I will not blame you if this is the last blog of mine that you read:)

    3. Dear Presto,

Without any doubt this will not be the last blog we and I will read from you.

Ill be following you.....still mucho mucho interersted in the HU part

    4. That is disappointing indeed. Even if you maintain that marijuana isn't chemically addictive, don't you have to concede that it is very much psychologically addictive?

I'm going to have to agree with Nightbreed and call it a failed experiment. The lingering after-effects of the pot smoking are undeniable. Honestly, I think you're going to discover that when you really are ready to live a sober life again you'll have less and less in common with your smoking buddies and will just naturally drift apart. This will likely be a good thing.

People handle it differently, but I'm curious -- how many times have you ever shipped a phonecall from a loved one to voicemail because you didn't feel like talking stoned? Ever worried that some emergency would pop up and you wouldn't be mentally prepared to deal with it because you were high?

    5. You are very wise clueless.

I agree with everything you just said except for the friendship part. I pride myself on loyalty and I will not base my friendships on whether or not they smoke weed.

I always answer the phone no matter what state I am in but if an emergency were to occur, the weed could potentially be an obstacle.

    6. All good Presto, keep up with the experiment IF YOU want too. No one else is going to take your experiment results as anything but we will still be interested in results.

As far as Clueless getting on your case. Nothing addictive about weed, its only habitual. He's habitually a smoker so he reaches for the pipe. You didn't crave it you just took it. i'm rolling a joint as we speak so I may be biased. We never need to smoke but after all these yeas we want to smoke..... everyday.

Weed doesn't react well with some but if you have smoked consistently for some years, you actually can 'wake up' for most any situation/emergency... it is nothing like being drunk.

Cheers Presto, keep at poker and quit this experiment if you think being a smokefree player is hurting AT ALL.
    7. All I have to say is smoke up lol. Weed is good for the system
    8. This experiment is pretty much worthless from here on out unless you start from day 1 again. You have to be kidding me if you think you can take a "mulligan" and actually expect your body to perform like you'd gone 9 days without smoking......might as well blaze nonstop again or start over imo.

    10. I forgot to say, "I salute you."

I have bipolar disorder and marijuana triggers manic episodes for me-- sucks, but is good at the same time.

those of u with bipolar would know what im talking about
    11. yeah, you cant take a mulligan and pick up at day 10. you need to start over again and repeat the process, without cracking. gl sir.
    12. if i didnt smoke weed i dont think id play poker!!!

    13. love the blog man I can relate ..highly. keep em coming!
    14. i hate everyone
