The stars have aligned for me this year. On October 19, my first term of senior year comes to a close. It just so happens that the live series I’ve been looking forward to, the World Poker Finals at Foxwoods Resort and Casino. And just to make the pot a little bit sweeter, Foxwoods has been generous enough to offer me a free room for two nights during that week. So on the 21 and 22 of October, I will be playing in my first two events of this year’s WPF, and this time around I plan on making more of a mark.
My two goals for this year’s WPF are simple:
1) Don’t play with scared money: This was my biggest issue with my play from 2008. I blew a big opportunity in last years first event, the $300 Shootout event. I won a big hand on the very first pot and then managed to just donk off the rest of my stack on pot after pot because the buy in was in the front of my mind the entire time. I will not under any circumstances allow myself to do that again.
2) Don’t try to do too much: I have the issue playing live of trying to do a little too much. Against most really poor players, tighter play has usually worked out best for me particularly when the blinds are low and stacks are deeper. I really feel like the first few hours of these MTTs are more important than they would be online because the blind levels are going up every 50 mins and the stack sizes stay good for a while.
Plain and simple, I’ve booked my room, I’ve bought my tickets, and I am ready to give this a shot. If I swing and miss, that’s fine. I can live with myself just not playing well or catching a bad string of cards. What I can’t forgive myself for is giving up on it like I did last year. I will keep myself on task this time around, I have to hit my $18K sooner rather than later.
