I'm not going to pretend to be any kind of security expert, and while I speak with 2+2 staff on a regular basis as part of my advertising rep job, I don't have any inside information on the current hack. But from what I do know, I can see no reason to believe the two incidents are related, in spite of the timing. The compromised accounts were used one at a time, always in an effort to scam people on transfers, and with no effort to use different IPs each time. Anybody could have done what that person (or those people) did - it simply involved finding accounts that hadn't posted for several months or years and trying different simple passwords. Probably the most complex part of the scam would have been after the account was compromised - being able to con people into believing they were a legitimate trader.

The current situation is much more complicated, and would require actual hacking skills. The hacker wanted 2+2 administration to know he/she had done it, in order to demonstrate their hacking skills, and the motivation was completely different. While it's certainly possible that it could have been the same person, it seems highly unlikely given that the methods and motives were completely different.

I'm not speaking on behalf of 2+2 here, just sharing what I know and have deduced.

I interviewed Mason today on my webcast (Poker Advocacy with Rich Muny, on OnTilt Radio). Mason reiterated that they took the site down to protect it from the hacking (i.e, hackers did not take down the site, though they did compromise its security) and that they'd keep it down until assured that it's secure. He did not provide an update ETA on forum reopening. The site still says four to six days (from April 27th), which is today through May 3rd.

NoahSD was on as well. We discussed the ramifications of this regarding steps users need to take (some of which has been discussed ITT). I'll post a link to the show once it's available.

The original reason I came on tonight was to say that I was taken for some money by the hackers on 2+2. I don't keep much money in my own bank account, that stays in my wifes, for bill paying reasons. Today I went to 7-11 to buy a 3 dollars worth of stuff and decided to debit it, my card was declined. I called my bank to find out why and they began to read off a bunch of charges to Apple ITunes, 1 to Amazon and a 245.00 charge to some place called 1clickdirect.com that was delined. They didn't get a lot, they took 300 from my bank account only because thats what I had in there at the time. But they did attempt to go for more. The bank stated the person who made the purchases had my debit card number. The only way I see this possible is they got my into my PayPal account (Which I have no shut down also). If you are like me maybe you don't check your bank statements, or balance a check book. I just move money to my wife and spend frivilously what I leave for myself. Check your bank accounts asap!!!!! Check your PayPal. Sucks this happened to me but it could have been worse. My bank is investigating and stated I should be seeing a reinbursement in 7 days because the ITunes charges were blatantly obvious to be fraudulant. The first charge was on the 22nd, then the 26th and the majority of them Today.

People get their bank and paypal stuff hacked every day. I'd bet, on average, at least one poker player gets bank fraud every day. With the number of members at 2p2, that means alot of fraud dealt with by their collective membership - all of it having nothing to do with 2p2.

At least give some evidence as to how this is linked with 2p2. How did the hacker get access to your paypal? How did he get your debit card number?
