    Serious question tho...

    I've paid taxes for the past 3 years and filed as a professional poker player. Would I be able to file for unemployment?

    OP you cant as you didnt pay the unemployment tax. Self-employed people don't get the benefit.

    What if you recently quit your job (less than 6 months ago) to play poker professionally? I paid it at my old job so????

    Doubtful.. you quit your job and didnt get laid off. Im not 100% positive but I would think unemployment is for those who got laid off and not for those who quit. Pretty dumb to quit your job in this economy and to everyone who said "poker will always be there".. yeah right!

    haha i got laid off.. after getting sick 3 years ago... spent 15 months in and out of hospital having major surgeries and wat not.. im still fighting to get the 15 months of benefits i was entitled too after having worked 13 years and paying some years 30 to 40k in tax... lol us gov unemployment says i have to go through disabilities and disabilities denied the claim said that im entitled to unemployement... fucking joke fu us fuck u mother fucking us gov

    generally correct yes. UNless you quit bc you thought you were getting fired anyway, you don't get unemployment

    Anyone else love how all the fish come out when the poker sites go down and hate on us for taking shots and playing mtts instead of going the conventional route?

    Really justed wanted an answer, not someone to tell me how dumb I am. I have a lot of money saved up because I'm not a degenerate and I could get a job immediately if I wanted to. I quit because I wasn't enjoying my life and wanted to pursue other options. I'm only playing poker in the mean time because I wanted to spend this summer traveling the country/enjoying my life until I figure out my next career move. Next time take it easy on the assumptions hotshot.

    If you filed as a self employed poker player then yes you did pay SS. That's what the 'self-employment tax' is. SS and medicare.
