  1. Although it is a lot easier to just crank up the computer, open up Poker Tracker and the pokerstars client and grind all day long in shorts and a T-shirt and have endless coffee on the stove, I now have to get dressed, get ready, drive down to the local card room about 25 minutes away. ($10 worth of gas, $10 to $20 for food drinks etc.). Put my life at risk on the road, I nearly got wrecked yesterday by an idiot driver who snap called a right hand turn from the left lane directly in front of me, claims she didn't see me at all. Put my health at risk. I never got the flu from the computer, but now I have a sore throat and stuffy head from playing live poker all weekend......
I do feel fortunate to have live action nearby.
The tournaments are full of fish and LAG players who will basically call with any two cards. I have yet to find a standard re-raise that will get some of them off their limp hands. 3X doesn't work at all, I haven't had much luck with 7X to 10X. 25X seems to get their attention, so it is prolly somewhere between 10X and 25X.
The cash games are loose and TAG strategy with an occasional LAG move is def profitable. Dudes were calling to the river with small and middle pairs with broadway cards on the flop turn river for half their stacks! It's hard to believe that there are so many fishy players locally.
I had two final tables last week. Finished 4th and 10th for some decent bankroll cash.
Heading down again today to play in the $2500 Gtd. $40 buy-in afternoon tourney.
I am fortunate to have a high quality well managed card room with professional dealers so nearby with fields of fish.
There are some very good players as well. They are easy to spot and they spot me as quickly and profer their friendship and respect.
Not as easy as grinding away on-line but I will take the risks involved to my health and safety and venture forth.
I've learned much from grinding day after day on-line and I find that taking it to the live tables is the obvious next move.

  6. got a casino about 20mins away. dont really feel like playing anymore. prolly take like a few months off and venture over there.
  7. I live about 45 minutes away from 2 different casinos. Mountaneer has a worthless poker room, and Rivers Casino is nice and all, but the tournaments are pretty terrible. So i've been stuckplaying 1/3 cash games which are like playing bingo. It's going to take some adjusting to get used to (especially since i've never really been a cash game player). I'm starting to not be shocked anymore though when I get 6 callers on my preflop raise even though I hadn't raised in 3 orbits. Or when someone opens 8xbb and still gets 4-6 callers. Or when someone calls down after you barrel and they show a low pocket pair.

It's a different world out there. And after three days of trying to grind 1/3 live and trying to build a BR from almost nothing again, I'm beyond pissed off with this situation.

LOL! Well, I don't use a Mr. Coffee. I make my coffee the Melitta method. Grind the coffee, put it in a cone filter on top of a 1 qt. mason jar, boil water ON THE STOVE, pour, serve, make some more.

  11. Commute between San Diego and Houston for work. San Diego - lots of card rooms. Houston - uh, not so much. Closest room is at Isle of Capri in Lake Charles. Kind of a dump but decent poker room, however, the biggest game they spread is 2-5 NL and only on weekends. 2 hour drive. One would think that the great state of Texas would allow TEXAS holdem but no such luck ... :)

    Cheers

  15. I play live more than online.
Pretty much every players range at my card room for LHE is: Any 2 suited cards, Any 2 that can make a straight, any ace, any pocket pair, Face Card and X, Premiums are a given.
That might not apply to 15/30 LHE though.

    N. Houston here, and yeah, barring the drive to Lake Charles, I'm having to look at the local underground games around town.
  17. More underground card rooms FTW ?
