I know it's a bit late but on C-SPAN there will be a live hearing on Internet Gambling.
It will start after the current general speeches happening now. -
There is a live sweat thread on 2+2 where people are sweating it live. I am going to follow it soon after I eat breakfast because it sounds interesting and is important to me.

Barton just owned that Indian lol
-
1st time I've ever watched C-Span for more than 2 minutes
-
I'm betting c-span has never seen these ratings haha
-
it's amazing how fucking stupid people are

lolz i know. As long as all these old people are making decisions about online gambling based on the capabilities of current technology, we're kinda fucked.
-
So they are trying to get rid of HUDs? (haha they keep calling it a BOT)

You would rather him say, "Well, you lose the money you put in the pot"? In many cases, that is what happens, and to give a full answer even if you know exactly what happens off the top of your head, it would take much longer than the 30 seconds that the Chairwoman allowed him to respond. There are a lot of variables that go into what happens when you disconnect. -
Here's a complete recap of the hearing in case you missed it. It was refreshing to hear discussion on consumer protection and not on the moral aspects of whether we should legalize gambling:

The replay is up and working

It's on the right side of the page under the video playlist "Hearing on Online Gaming: From Earlier" -
Eggert is pretty well respected and definitely not a "moron." Agreed that the hearing got a little sidetracked with the bot and software discussion, although those are two points the committee might want to consider. I don't think a lot of the committee members understand how online poker really works, however.

What did you guys think of the opponent rating system? -
+ terrible idea. & the displaying of probabilities to win they were talking about in comparison with slot machines, was that just rake & entry fees or were they talking about having pokerstove built in and running to help the noobs? I got the impression that they really wanted to take any kind of an edge or profit margin out of the game or reduce it as much as possible, but I only saw about the last 30 min I'll watch the replay soon.

i mean, they can't have winning % built in, cause that would require them showing everyone's hole cards to everyone, which would obviously be retarded...
maybe they're just talking about like how often someone's AA wins or whatever, so people don't think that the programs are cheating them. (once nad for all ending the 'online poker is rigged' debate...or that they 'set the decks to make more action' or anything absurd like people used to say)
idk, this whole thing was clearly a shit show and displays the incompetence of our governmental system -
If it is based on winnings or profit, we know that won't really work, or at least won't be accurate. It would take hundreds of thousands of hands to converge on an accurate rating.

I am not completely against it as there are already things like it out there if you just do a little research, its not that hard to find. But I don't think it will do what they want it to do, and its going to be very inaccurate. I would imagine the HU players will HATE it.

What that guy wants is for the recreational gambler to clearly see the disadvantage that he has at the table. Rake, entry fees and such are already easily visible, but what you can't tell is your skill level vs the rest of the table. I doubt this is a big deal in an MTT as it is in ring games and more so in HU play.
We know that this is not really possible, as there are way to many variables and sample sizes will have to be ridiculously large for the numbers to have any meaning.
FWIW this guy wants casino slot machines to be labeled with their payback % as well as all casino table games to clearly state the house edge on any and every bet that you can make. That's his problem he thinks people should know exactly what they are losing on every bet they make. When you are playing against a set game with set rules, this is easy to figure. When you are playing against other people that make their own decisions, it is much harder to calculate if not impossible. -
I'm not sure amateurs allways want to know how bad they are.
Also it seems needlessly controlling. They seem to asume all people are stupid and need to be protected from there own stupidity. I mean poker is not destroying many lives as far as I know.
I can understand banning huds tho. I even think it may be better for poker because it'll give beginning players and occasional players a better chance to keep up and makes the game a little less clinical(before you start hammering on me, I'm a full ring cash player mainly and I rely on my HUD to survive).
Anyway, I hope you guys get it sorted out over there, gl! -
Edited By: TheVillageGrinder Oct 26th, 2011 at 01:56 AMYeah I'm glad it wasn't about morality too but don't you think much of the discussion re: consumer protection was kind of a waste of time because these ppl were talking and speculating about things that were relatively easy fixes, or at least things that the current technology could account for?Originally Posted by Dan

I mean they were all just sitting up there speculating. If they were gonna get into that level of discussion about protecting the consumer from any possible glitch that could take place, or way someone could cheat, then why not have someone who is a security expert in online gaming present to testify?
