I was kind of surprised to see an article on Poker Listings saying that Josh Arieh was retiring:
“I’m not thinking about it, I am [retiring from poker]. This is my last tournament until the next WSOP. To me, poker is not what it used to be.”
Arieh has Limit Hold'em and Pot Limit Omaha bracelets and has banked nearly $4 million lifetime from the WSOP and finished third in the 2004 Main Event. According to the Hendon Mob, he has over $6 million in career tournament earnings.
Apparently, though, he'd be back to poker if the game were legalized online in the USA:
“If poker gets legalized in the U.S. there will be another boom. It would be great again. That would make it worth what we go through.”
What does everyone think? Why would he walk away? -
Probably sick of having to travel all over to play. A lot of people especially with a family dont want to be traveling the globe all the time.
-
He lost approx $130k this year in the WSOP according to sharkscope ($120k per scope + $10k ME not yet recorded). His sponsorships from pokersites blindly throwing money at him are done. With online poker sponsorship revenue drying up, especially for US players, he isn't the only pro to just decide to play occasional events and go onto other ventures, he was maybe just the highest profile one that decided he had to make an annoucement about it instead of just doing it.
-
didnt he go 'all in' to play the one drop?
anyways, he's walking away because like he said, poker isnt what it used to be. world economy sucks, the poker economy sucks, and it's not even legal for the biggest market to even play online. -
He said he was planning to with all his remaining savings, but was 'shocked' when it was sold out.
-
Is he the same guy who was slagging david einhorn off about his charity endeavours on twitter.

Busto

exactly this.

I saw him flat a utg open with 66 with like 12 beebs on a WPT FT that he eventually got 2nd in vs Daniel Alaei. Coupled with numerous post flop blunders which made me wonder how the fk this guy could possibly be playing live 10k's for a living.

I kind of think Josh was one of a number of guys who was in at the right time to make a lot of easy money for a while. He final tabled the 2004 WSOP when Raymer won, which was a very highly watched event. It was before poker on TV was so saturated. At the time it was basically the WPT and WSOP that were on TV, and there was a rapidly growing fan base. He was in perfect position to be marketable and make a lot of money both via sponsorship deals and just all the easy money in games everywhere during that time. He's clearly a good player, but so are a lot of people nowadays. Most well-known TV pros cashed in big time on poker site sponsorships while the getting was good. It's not so easy to go play $10k events when everything (travel, buy ins, etc.) is coming out of pocket or alternatively someone else is paying and taking a cut of your winnings.
I think he's like a lot of people who hung around real close to the public eye in poker when there was a ton of money to be made but have faded away or are fading away now that it's a much tougher market. He's probably smart enough to have known it wouldn't go on like that and to have a back up plan of sorts. And I'd also guess he'll continue to play the big cash games around Atlanta -
lol i saw him play a lot on that high stakes cash game that isn't on tv anymore. Used to be on the game show network. Never very impressed with his play. Also seems like a hard guy to like.

Funny how i sense sarcasm from words on a screen. :)
But yeh what swish said he isnt even retiring. -
oh? he didnt even get in? either way, obviously would be a foolish thing to do. i love how he says that he's a degenerate and would take action on him not playing poker again. could anyone who loves action that much really quit? I certainly can't blame anyone for wanting to quit, and I've been workin on my exit for a while. He's right, it's just not really worth the trouble. It is for some people, but lots of others are just gettin the fuck out before they get into a bad staking relationship and end up becoming criminals

isnt this the same dude that claimed he was gonna take his entire net worth and put it into the one drop tourney?
clearly an attention seeking bull shitter -
reading comprehension ftmfw
-
hes a fishcake anyways taking pictures of people during tournaments asking who they are... hope he is broke
-
^^^^ this. i live in ATL and know he does mighty fine playing cash games. PS - sirswish played with you late night in the $k - very nice run. congrats on the big score.

He isn't retiring, he's only going to play the big tournaments. People just don't quit poker. They have it taken away from them by lawmakers who are donkeys.

Holy chit, I didn't know Sharkscope had live event stat like that. Very convenient to figure out how much I lost overall!!!
