  1. Sure, China's government regulates the internet, but all you have to do is pay like $7/month for a VPN and it's like using the internet at home. I use Astrill and it's like I never left the states internet-wise.

China is pretty free and there is a lot less crime (mostly because of the harsh punishments, which are good imo). I don't regret moving here one bit.
  2. Ted or anyone else in Costa Rica...can you give us a little more incite on the lifestyle where you live. Are you close to the water? What are the people like? Do the people like Americans? Does it seems safe? pictures, videos anything that can give us a better idea if this is a viable option for us....

also is it possible to get a place for only 3 months?

  3. The Costa Rican people are awesome. I've had all sorts of trouble getting back on stars but going out and hanging out with the locals (along with other players) has been awesome. Some of the most fun loving people I've ever encountered.

Here's a few pics I have of our place .

And yeah getting 3 month leases shouldn't be a problem.

The place im at is right on the beach prolly around 100yards to the ocean, its in a gated community with 24hr guards. The people here are really friendly as much of costa rica is dependant on tourism. About half of them speak some sort of english.

Its hard to get american style foods where im at as most of it has to be imported.

Its generally very safe, the only time you might have a problem is if you are out after bar close wandering around by yourself or something.

It took me about a week to get stars unlocked, had to wait 6 days for stars to approve me after submitting docs although they told me it would only take 3 days?

Im in Jaco Beach on the pacific side. The complex is called Condominiums La Flor. It's less convienient than living in san jose or escatuz since its an hr cab ride from the airport but well worth it for me anyways.

Kristen will def be able to set you up with a nice place especially if you want to have roomates.

    Pura Vida!

This is just plain sad as hell! Communist China is more free than the land of the free, sickening!

Nice pics Ted and winwin07, think of us poor fools who have to play on Merge.

  14. BUMP-

Pura Vida!!! I Made it. Its the morning of my third day in Jaco. Mainly bumping this b/c throwinphins, another p5er, is coming out in June and we are looking for a couple of more room mates so I want to put the line out early. Also, I wanted to see if any local p5ers in Jaco area wanted to hang out/get some drinks.... I am in a new country by myself and am looking to make some new friendships.

A little about my trip out, Kristen and the girls at poker refugees (who are awesome, very diligent and know their way around the country it seems) set me up in a nice little efficiency about 3 blocks from the beach. It is on the property of an american expat who owns his own driving company and has been here for like 20 years or something. He has his own separate house with his young family and there is a yard with a couple of dogs. I brought my dog with me b/c I couldnt just leave her behind (and i love her obv), so it is a good spot for the time being. The main issue was getting her through customs, it took ~6 hours just to get the paperwork done, but hey, the pace of life out here is just much slower. Something I have to get used to.

If there are any players sitting on the fence about coming out, just do it : ) Its gorgeous out here. The jungle that surrounds the city of Jaco hums with life. Its electric. This is also a great surfing town, one of the best in the world afaik, and both north and south contain great legendary spots. Ive been a snowboarding junky for the past 3 years and am looking forward to learning how to surf. I figure every day is a powder day on the ocean : )

So ya, if any of you p5ers are thinking of coming out, let me know so I can get Poker refugees looking for a great spot, the sooner the better chance we find a perfect one. Throwinphins was thinking about the escazu area. By the time he gets out here I will have been in Jaco for 2 months, and as I want to explore the whole country, I am fine with anywhere and am not picky. If any of you have any budget or process questions, feel free to hit me.

Also, thanks to the community for all the replies, they helped inspire me to come out here. Ok, Im gonna go jump in the ocean for my morning swim : ) Pura Vida!

  15. Grats on the successful move PP.

Anyone know how the golf is out there? Can't survive without golf, any details would be awesome.

    Thanks
  16. Wow that place does look sick....makes me want to move out there even if they do get poker going back in the states!! The land of Hypocracy is what we are. Good luck to all of you guys I hope everything turns out well for you. I do have a couple of questions to any of you that live down there.

    1. How are the women?
    2. What are the marijuana laws?
    3. Do they have any casinos with poker rooms?

    1) The best. I married one of them :)
    2) Similar to US, but there are plenty of Americans down there who use it (much like in the US).
    3) Yep, quite a few

    ?

Its like a 600$ fine if you get caught with any, but the enforcement is lenient to say the least lol
  19. Ey guys I'm planning on moving to Costa Rica at the end of August with a friend. We're planning to spend at least 4 months in Costa Rica building our rolls, travelling, surfing, learning Spanish; getting a taste of la pura vida.

We were thinking about trying to find a place in Guanacaste (on the coast) because I read it has the mildest rainy season. Open for other parts of the country too though; just looking for an area that's lively, has a good night life and is on the coast or close to it!

We're looking to share a house with other players so please let me know if any of you will have open spots in your houses or if you know of any one else that will.

    Thanks!
