You never really know when its time to move up because you don't have a big enough sample size of higher stakes unless you fully move up. One way to get an idea is to be honest with yourself about the results you've had in lower stakes. If you're say a $4.40 180 man grinder and you're smashing these stakes, then move up. If you're marginally profitable, then you need to put in more work. Also, do keep playing those lower stakes, even if it is with less volume when you move up. The lower stakes will help keep your confidence if you get beat up by better players and will also help keep your bankroll alive -
Great post!

My ego was overblown when I really hadn't accomplished much but I thought I had. I was stupid aggressive and went on a heater, which when I was running well, seemed like I couldn't do anything wrong. Then reality set in, I moved up in stakes and started to get, basically, embarassed, which is the second thing that had to happen. I couldn't beat better players and I was losing more money due to higher buyins. The last thing is that I had to accept it was my fault and not blame it on variance as I so often did. I lost a flip, but did I maximize chips elsewhere to minize this flip? This is basically how I started to think. For anyone who wants to learn how to apply aggression I would have to say that you should go to the far extreme end of the spectrum and see just how crazy you can be. What's going to happen if I 3b here? 4b? Take note of players reactions, you'll start noticing things about certain players that you can then later take advantage of. Just always keep in mind what it is you are trying to do and when to back off. Lastly, pay attention to detail and go over your hands. The player that plays ABC poker, doesn't need to work that hard because all they do is play their hands face up. Once you start mixing things up, you need to take it more seriously that the work off the tables is as important as on the tables.
Also a great question from gags. -

I have learned a ton on p5s. Most importantly, I learned that there isn't a set way to play poker and that all players are different, I basically learned to think outside the box. When I post in PD, I learn a lot as well. The saying "those who can't do, teach" is meaningless to me in poker. Poker is a game where, if you can't explain your thoughts, you will eventually get eaten alive. So teaching and posting help me by forcing me to understand what it is I'm trying to say. I don't really have a favourite site, some software is better than other I guess but it's all the same to me, I'm there to win.
Andres is someone I would classify as a silent assassin. He's one of those guys, for some reason or another, I don't notice at my table and then all of a sudden, he makes my life hell. He has a very good understanding of flow and dynamics, which I think is crucial to winning poker. -
jorgeezy and ghettofabolous dont count as people you've been fortunate enough to talk about?...and in your backstory that you've given, they arent mentioned at all...good to see you remember where you came from

the players I find most difficult to play? fish really, they level me more than regs
helped me in my game? too many to mention, all I can say is that in the last 2.5 years I have been fortuante enough to talk to likes of gags30, doubledave22, gboro, mybrimlow, JeanGrae, NSB, illini213.... the list goes on
if I wasn't playing poker? I'd be in some type of money management. I always knew that money made the world go round, my school confirms it for me
anyway, a hypothetical question ----- lets say you have a friend who taught you a ton about poker, backed you, and saw enough potential in you to have you live with his friend in...lets say...ohio...this friend lets you live in vegas for free during the summer, paid for all your groceries and rent and only added it to your makeup...this friend basically took you off the streets...its hypothetical remember!...this friend has a girlfriend...shes maybe j5ss...and she digs you...flirts with you...etc...would u get with her?...its a tough situation, just curious what you'd do
also, whats your favorite color?...GOOD LUCK AT THE TABLES -

What is the longest amount of time you've spent in 1 single online mtt? Also I've always wondered what the beginning stages seem to be when you and another reg start leveling eachother ie- say you 5bet jam on a AAX flop w KQ....obv very situational but always wanted to know if I'm getting someplace at the tables
-
Longest time is probably around 10 hours or so. I can't really remember but it was an FTOPs event. I try not to get into levelling wars anymore with other regs, I used to do it a lot and I'd just end up levelling myself which cost me money

Would you say 18/45 mans or cash?
Do you think going for supernova elite is worth it?
Do you satty into live events often? Whats your biggest cash in a live mtt or biggest cashout in a cashgame?
Do you play alot of live cash games?
Are you signed up to any training sites?
Will you start playing PLO cash soon? I feel there profitable but unsure how to multi-table alot without going crazy
The wisest decision you'll ever make in your life is to never harm your friends. When you lose someone who treats you golden you'll go insane. This friend sounds like a boss and thats def you want someone to have your back and give him your all too. Don't take people for granted its the worst feeling when you see how they can also be your greatest enemy. Theres billions of other girls... no reason to go for his. BTW im not bashing you, glgl in finding your sweetheart. -

remembering where you came from is overrated.

I'm getting this strange feeling that this isn't a hypothetical.

Its not hypothetical for the most part, and my response is marry her, which is what ended up happening. There wasn't spite or hate, its just something that happens. I've been happily married for over a year now and thats all that really matters. I would really hope to keep this thread based on poker, and hopefully people will still ask poker questions instead of looking for drama.
For the Sunday Mill/WU, I'd say play some of the low buy in shootouts or the low buy in rebuy turbos. Its more important to not stretch your roll too thin by thinking you have get it, then end up spending what the buy in is or more trying to get in. Cash games can be more profitable depending on the stakes and your ability in cash games. If you're playing say .25/.50, the play there is pretty soft and if you have an ok roll to handle some beats, you should be ok and can grow your roll at the same time. I don't satty into live events at all, but I should probably start trying. I've only played maybe 10 live tourneys and the first one I played, a $70 nightly at Turning Stone, I won for like $1100, that was my only cash in a live mtt so far. I don't play many live cash games, I used to go to Niagara and made a bit of money but that was a while back. I really do want to get into PLO, I find it to be really interesting but talking to people about it, it just seems like a very tilting game. It definitely is profitable, I know of a few who play HU PLO and just rake in money. As far as supernova elite.....I guess it can be worth it, but I never have strived to get it. I know there are cash bonuses and other bonues that make it worth it but I would assume its really hard for a mtter to get. I have watched videos on deucescracked.com, its something I do when I feel my game is out of whack and I need some comon sense in my life.Originally Posted by 88XIN88

Full Tilt is a tough spot. I really like the software but I'd probably be shaky on the management so I'd have to learn about them first. My routine has evolved from the lazy to the productive. At first I'd wake up 15 minutes before playing, order some take out, and play all day, just to repeat it the next day. I then read an article about a player having a morning routine where he would get up, maybe run, eat a good breakfast etc. Whole point was that he wanted his blood flowing before he played, so I started doing that. Now, I'm usually up very early in the day and I work on other things before I play, like school. A routine should be your preference and whatever gets you in the right frame of mind to play. My setup is a laptop and a monitor, its pretty basic. I use a MacBook and a 24" monitor. I try to review my hands as often as possible. I still try to talk hands over with other people but I also find that if you study your own hands from some time ago, not just the previous day, you can find holes in your own game. -

Think you skipped one of 99nvr's questions! Mad respect...seem like cool guy from what I've seen at the online tables...and remember you at one of my WSOP tables (but didn't know who you were at time).

One hand that sticks out in my mind is more for comedic value at the time. Was 8 handed at the early $109 ft on a Sunday and I get AA I'm about 40bbs deep and before I raise I just said to myself "I'm going to raise and cooler the shit out of jcamby". Not sure why I thought that, wasn't any hatefulness or anything like that, I just felt he was gonna ship it on me. He did, he had AQo and about 30bbs. Another one was a massive suckout on the final table buble of the FTOPs event I got 5th in. AJK opens the btn, I flat ATo in the sb and bb squezzes, I'm the short stack with ~30bbs. Guy in bb had been pretty aggro and active so I decided to back raise jam and he had QQ, I rivered the gutter though while he made a set. As for lately, hands don't really stick out to me anymore, not sure why

I find a person in your position (your level) is more interesting and relevant to me than listening to an Ivey, Dwan, or Hellmuth. So I thank you for your generosity and courage to expose yourself to us. This is my 7th decade on this planet and Im learning new things everyday.
One thing Ive learned is that no one is free from making mistakes. I think in each decade of my existence there is something I would like to forget or wish I did different. But we cant go back. We can only try to be better. Better at what we do and better as human beings.
There will always be people who want to remind you of what you did back then. There will always be those that are willing to judge you yet forget about their own fallabilities. I guess its like poker. You dont learn from your mistakes you just keep making them and blaming others for your misfortunes.
So keep on keeping on Tom.
Oh my mom too hated my professional choice. But as soon as I got some national recognition, she was the first in line to tell people. "Thats my son!". -
lol, the little one I guess. She always sleeps on my lap

For those who want in on the inside joke, we had a cat but then we started to do some volunteer work for Toronto Cat Rescue (my wife did it mostly) and one won me over and we are in the process of adopting it.

Building on what you said about having a productive routine, how regimented is the poker part of that routine? Do you play pretty much the exact same tournaments each day or just sort of register for different things based on your mindset that day?
How many MTTs do/did you play in a typical week? -
Edited By: tom44411 Oct 16th, 2011 at 02:40 AMI register for pretty much the same mtts everyday, the only variable is the time or how long I plan on playing that day. Very rarely do I add different mtts but I will do it if I feel the need to mix things up a bit, like if I were in a slump, I may add a lower buy in mtt just to get my confidence going again. I also believe in having certain mtts as a comfort zone. A couple of years ago it was the $22 1r1a on stars or the $26 2pm est on ftp, now its the big $55 or to some extent, the big $162. I used to play a ridiculous amount, now I'm lucky to get in 50 a week.Originally Posted by boneralert
