  1. Ok, lots of people have been asking me to do one for a while now, so why not

    Taken from many other wells:

A stranger is being shown around a village that he has just become part of. He is shown a well and his guide says "On any day except Tuesday, you can shout any question down that well and you'll be told the answer." The man seems pretty impressed, and so he shouts down, "Why not on Tuesday?" A voice from in the well shouts back, "Because on Tuesday, it's your day in the well."

Ask away, will do my best to answer everyone, poker related or not (would be nice to keep the well at least semi poker related cause otherwise a lot of them just get dumb)

I'm going to bed now, so i'll start answering questions tomorrow morning

Oh, and before anyone asks, i think andressoprano's game is wonderful...and it was definitely a pleasure meeting him this summer!

  6. hi gags,

in your opinion, what's the reason for the gap between winning HSMTTers, and those who crush the game? how would one go about closing that gap?

what are your plans for your poker career in the future? if USA remains unregulated for the foreseeable future, will you turn your back on the game in regards to a career?

do you actually like doubledave's music? no, really?

    Reason: COME AT ME DAVE
  7. What did you start grinding? Were you ever a low limit player or immediately jumped into mid-HSMTTs? And if you started as a low limit grinder when did you know it was time to move up? What was your first BIG SCORE?

    1. When will u be back online? Do u have any plans on moving out of the country? I miss folding to you...
    2. On a scale of 1 to 10, were 1 is a supernit and 10 is lilholdem. How nitty am I?
    3. Whats your favourite colour?

I just wanted to add that I respect your game alot, and you are, imo, one of the best.

  9. I don't play the daily 215 turbos or 109 2x chance, basically because there full of Regs and I have no edge. I used to play anything my br would allow.

Have you always played anything you can? Do you believe you have an edge over any field? Are their any online mtts you have ever missed because of these factors?

    Thanks for doing this.

  10. Hi Mike! Im a big fan

    1) What was your first breakthrough online score?
    2) Name 3 online regs that gave you the most trouble
    3) Most underrated player that noone talked about pre black friday
    4) If you could slowroll one online player deep in a tournament who would it be?
    5) When will you finally hit a big score in a live tournament?
    6) Borgata next month?
  11. Hi!

    1) How long are you allready playing fulltime/recreational? What will you be doing when you get 27 years old (assuming you are not yet)? ...30?

    2) Now that online poker is gone, what are you doing? Are you sad all the time or are you actualy greatfull for this break which gives you lots of time to think about other aspects of life and life in general? Or are you just grinding live a lot?
If thats the case could you imagine your self only playing live for the "rest of your life"? Obv its way tougher BR-managment- and variance wise but I just mean technicaly, the fact to have to be sitting around on one single table without the convenience of working at home.

    3) Do you have the feeling sometimes that there is a great part of adictivnes in this game, (greed for money...) or are you able ,as allready R.J_legit asked, to totaly separate your self from the game while you are not playing. Do you have any kind of philosophy to better achieve this goal (separate urself from the game)?

    4) Is it not a bit too early for the well? I feel like the best is still to come for you.;)

    Tx

  12. what do prefer live or ol? after bf have you appreciated how soft live poker is compared to ol?

    where are you from?

how long did it take you to figure out you can be profitable in mtt's?

what do you think helped you become a better player other then just putting in a ton of volume?

do you blaze.. if so blunt, bong or j's?

    favorite food? fav beer?

what do you think in your opinion are the most underrated aspects of mtt's / what are the simple mistakes you see people make in live or online tournaments?

    1. i've been trying to buy a house for several months now, so i guess that is sort of a goal to finally get one. just can't find one in a location that i like and is convenient and close to my family/friends and my gf's work as well...being in super expensive new jersey def doesn't help all this
    2. poker will def be regulated in the US...it's just a matter of when. frankly, i have no idea when, i hope it's soon...but in reality it probably won't be for at least a couple years. it really just takes one bill or state to put something through though and we could see something relatively quickly
    3. anyone that's ever eaten out with me know i'm a super super picky eater. there's this sandwich place near me that makes this grilled chicken panini, it's got pepper jack cheese and fresh basil on it, it's really good....as an aside, i will be deferring all further food related to bboy3110 and comandr_cool

Hope you had a nice night of sleep. Lots of people gonna be lowerin their buckets.

    1. Down swings can be tough. I just constantly try to go over my game and actually see if i'm just running bad or i'm playing poorly. usually it's some combination of the two, and i do what i can to make sure i still play my best. The biggest thing in a downswing is the mental side...and you just can't let it affect your game, cause if it does it'll be tough to pull out of it.

    2. i try to make sure i only play when i'm in the mood to play and in the right emotional state to play. if i'm angry or thinking about other life things, then i'ts not a good time to be playing, it'll definitely reflect in your play. one of the biggest things with me is playing when i'm hungry. if i haven't eaten and play i just play so terribly and make bad plays/bluffs/calls. i always try to eat a good meal before starting, and then anytime i feel my blood sugar start dropping i try to eat something. this took me a while to figure out earlier in my poker career and i feel like i blew a bunch of sessions because i was grinding a long session and not eating properly.

    3. it's definitely pretty high. there was a time when i probably only played my best like 60 or 70% of the time or so, which isn't really that much. for the past, idk, definite year, and probably
close to 2 years, i feel like my game has improved quite a bit and i play my best a lot more. tough to put a number on it, i'd liek to thikn 95% or so though

    4. I'm like extremely extremely stable mentally, like almost to the point where something is wrong with me...so I have an pretty absurd control of my emotions. when things are going wrong I can just choose to not get upset, and continue on with my life or session (if i choose to keep playing). I'm wrapped up in poker usually, so winning something usually doens't get me more involved. Lastly, i think that separating yourself from the game when things are going poorly is sort of being results oriented. like, playing poker is tough, and a real pull on your emotions. you have to be able to deal with the ups and downs and keep going on.

umm...def a pretty broad one to answer, but generally i look at my hand, and evaluate the strength of it for that situation...i look at chip stacks and determine some ranges of my opponents based on that plus previous reads and their positions at the table. if i get flat by someone i try to think about any history we might have from previous sessions or hands in that session, and (if they're a thinking player) start to think about what they think about my game if they think it's likely i'll have a weak hand. after the flop comes out i obviously see if i hit anything and decide how much showdown value i have vs his range. if my perceived range hits the flop hard, regardless of what i have, i'll usually bet, if my perceived range misses the flop but i still hit something good, then i'll obviously bet for value cause i'm gonna get called, if i hit it kind of weak i'll prolly c/call. all depends on his range vs my perceived range really...if i know it's a flop where he won't fold his range i either decide to c/f or come up with some other plan to win the pot (like a multi-street bluff or osmething)....

kind of goes on from there depending on opponent and what comes and how it affects everyone's range

    4. Do you watch Breaking Bad?

    1. certainly a tough one. i've been with my girlfriend since i first first started playing poker. (she watched me deposit $20 at a time and try to hit it big playing $5 sngs, lol) i think the best advice i can give is to just make sure you set time for the personal things you want to do. whether it's be with your girlfriend, drink at a bar with your friends, or go golfing by yourself...take days off to do those things. for example, i always tried to set my poker schedule around my gf's work schedule. if she was working evenings, i would grind more evening sessions, if she was working 9-5 i would start my grind at 12 and try to stop regging by 6 or so, so at least on the days when i busted stuff early i'd be done by 8 or so and we could hang for a bit.

    2. when i was in full swing grinding i would usually take 2 days off a week. it's all dependent on the person though really. like i said, i'm extremely stable mentally, so having bad sessions/weeks doesn't tilt me like it would a lot of people. it's good to not play every single day...but exactly what you should take off is up to the individual

    3. well, i definitely play less now since i'm not currently playing online (which is prolly gonna change soon)...but like i said i usually would try to play when my gf was in work so i would at least have some sort of normal social life. i used to reg 12-9 on mon and wed...12-5 or 6 on tues and thurs, and then 12-9 or 10 on sundays. usually my session ends probably 2 hours after the last tourney i reg...maybe 3 hours...obviously this changes depending on how i do in the later tourneys, but on average you're only in a tourney for like 2 or 3 hours. on fridays i would do lessons in the afternoon, and just poke around p5's/2p2 and answer threads or bs with people or wahtever. tough to put a number of hours on this...it's also tough to draw the line between like 'strategy discussion' and 'bullshitting with friends'...most of the time i would like be tlaking to someone about whatever, breaking bad or something (yeah i read ahead), and they'd be like hey look at this hh...and we'd bs for 4 minutes about the hh, then go back to talking about breaking bad...so like, idk. let's put it this way...i probably put 60+ hours into poker per week. but i certainly wouldn't consider it all work
    4. YES i watch breaking bad. it's one of the best shows ever. i've been getting people to watch it since season 1 came out. phenomenal show (and i don't say that about many shows)

    1. there's a really really really big gap between people who crush the game and people who are winners. there's so many big name high stakes regs who are good players. they're good fundamentally, they make moves here and there, but generally just play their cards...they're winners, and they play a ton of volume. people look them up on opr and see that they're up 100k and think they're the best ever. most of these players get absolutely raped by really good players. it's regs like this that better players love seeing at their table cause they know they can just abuse them.
the biggest gap is how people think about the game. i think a ton of people just look at their cards and are making decisions based on what they have. if they have JTs and it's agood 3b spot they'll 3b. if one of those isn't true, they'll fold. if they have a solid hand like 76s and it's a good spot to open, they'll open. if they defend the big with KQ and the flop is 722 they'll just check/fold. if they want to make a move they'll try to check/raise. they wont realize that it's an awful awful board to check/raise, things like that....these really good players aren't thinking about the cards as much, and are making moves more on people's ranges and perceived ranges. if their opponent isn't repping a lot, they'll do something to make them fold, regardless of how hard they hit the board. things like that. it's tough to get to this level, and many people never will. you have to have a complete understanding of many aspects of the game, as well as be super good at making reads, and adjusting to things on the fly. (also, for those wondering, i'm not saying that i'm in this elite group of players...that's not for me to decide. i play the game as best i can, and make decisions to the best of my ability.) as an aside, i think it's really tough to judge exactly how good you are at poker. the one thing that tells me i'm at least decent is when i sit down at a table in a really tough field and i know that a few of the 'good players' at my table are really fish and i've crushed them in the past. meh...who knows

    2. well, since the wsop i've still been very active in poker. i've been doing a ton of coaching and going over people's hand histories...i go to ac for tourneys when i can...and i've been playing cash in between at the closest casino to me. I'm currently talking to some people in malta and canada about potentially moving in with them to keep playing online. it's tough cause i have a gf here and stuff and really want to buy a house and everything, so it's a tough decision to make. As for a career...i'm not totally sure. i just know that right now i'm not finished with poker. there's too many things i want to accomplish still to just give it up and get a job. and as it stands, I am still making more money doing this than i could at any job (and yes, ih ave a college degree)...so for now we continue with poker

    3. i'm not really into acoustic music like that, so it's not really something that i will throw on to listen to when i'm playing or anything like that. but i always love listening to his new stuff. he writes some really cool songs and is definitley a good guitar player. look for me and him to make an album...clicking buttons 2012!

i've always played some kind of poker. when i was a kid (like 12 years old we're tlaking) we used to play for pennies and nickels in my basement. we played all kinds of goofy games like follow the queen, guts, pass the trash, cincinnatti, ummm what else...idk. i first was exposed to holdem by my friend. we used to play dealer's choice, so the dealer would pick a game and we'd play one hand. well we were like probably 14 by this point and still playing for nickels, and my friend oni was like i got this game it's called texas holdem...and he would always pick it. we would literally play 1 hand of holdem, and then go on to another game. and people didn't really like it cause it was kind of boring, but oni would always pick it. anyway...i went to college and read this book about the MIT blackjack team. i was hooked. i learned to count cards and read all this blackjack strategy, and was like counting down the days until i would turn 21.

at some point along the way i stumbled across online poker (i honestly don't rmember how i found it, i just remember being in my dorm playing by myself) and was like, oh i can play this now, ok let me try it. i just played play money cause i had no idea what i was doing (not to mention $0 to my name) and just played play money sngs. i hated play money cash cause everyone would just shove every hand, but if you played a 27 man sng there would be like 10 people that would snap bust...but usually you had like 10 or 15 people that actually watned to play and you could get some good playing in. it took me like 9 months, but i eventually turned the 1k play money into 1mil. this is all on pokerroom, btw, anyone remember that site? by this time it was 2005, and my friend told me about party poker. i split a $50 deposit with him and dicked around with that for a bit playing cash untill i lost it. my other friend told me about pokerstars and he had money on there, and he sent me $5.50 to play a sng. i thought i was an omaha expert at the time (i probably was since i at least knew that you had to use 2 cards and people had 0 clue about anything back then)...so i played an omaha sng, and won it. since that day i don't think i ever had less than $10 in my stars account. i just started playing $5 sngs, cause those were the smallest at the time. they eventually added $2 ones and eventually $1 ones...but i never had the patience for those after being a big $5 baller. my 'bankroll strategy' was to play $5 ones until i got up to $100, then i would play the $10 ones. i look back on it now and laugh at how foolish it was and how easily i could have gone broke, but i actually sort of made it work. the other joke about all this is that whenever i got up to like $150 i would cash out like $75. i was always afraid of losing, so i felt if i was always cashing out i would never be a losing player, and would have a safety net of cashouts to fall back on in case i lost all the money i had online. i sometimes would get under $20 and get nervous and give my friend $20 cash to send me online. i had this one friend who had one like 1k in a tourney once and thought he was the biggest baller ever. i would meet him on my college campus and give him cash, felt like a drug deal or something, lol

sometime in 2006 i started reading more about poker and like was working at getting better so i didn't lose. i would just sit in my rutgers dorm with nothing to do, since i like never went to class...and usually would decide between playing poker, counter strike, or xbox. it was just another game to me to keep me amused. making money was never really a goal of mine, i just didn't want to lose money. anything that i did wind up making was just like fun and cool. i took my first trip to a casino this year too. this has gotta be the best first hand at a casino story. so, i'm 21...me and my baller friend who had won the 1k go to the borgata one night. i've never played live poker before, was nervous as hell and had 0 clue what i was doing. i only had like $200 on me and knew i was gonna play 1/2 so i only bought in for like $150 or something so i could have a partial rebuy if i lost some. anyway...i fold for the first like orbit or so. there were these 2 or 3 kids to my right who were talking about partypoker and playing online, so in my eyes they were like internet whiz kids and millionaires and obviously the best ever at poker. anyway, it folds to the cutoff and this one whiz kid raises to 10 (which in my eyes was a huge raise cause i had never played cash before and anything bigger than 3x for an open raise was obviously bad cause that's what my book told me)...i had QTo in the bb and knew that this was my time. i call...flop comes J72. i check, he bets 15. now...i had recently learned how strong cbetting is, cause you know that your opponent is gonna fold if he misses. and people used to cbet a lot online and stuff...so i used to do this thing where i would just c/r like everything, cause people didnt know how to respond and would just fold. even if they ahd a pair they would fold a lot cause no one would bluff, and i would win. so i put in a check/raise to 33....yup, $33...just barely more than the minimum. in my eyes i was like, well it's $18 more, he certainly can't call without at least 2 pair for EIGHTEEN DOLLARS!!! little did i know, this is live poker, no one folds anything ever ever ever. the kid obviously calls instantly. at this point, i'm like shaking. i have 0 plan. i just bluffed off almost $50, like 1/4 of what i came with, and i just want to grab my $50 back and run home crying. the turn comes a J so now it's J72J...i check, and the kid checks...river is a 7...i quickly check and kid sighs and checks. i say something along the lines of 'i was just bluffing good call you got me' and turn over my QT. the kid laughs and says nah, i got counterfeit, and shows 33...board is J727J...my Q plays and win the pot with Q high. the 3 kids chuckled at my check/raise with nothing and mocked me at how poorly i played the hand. i sunk into my chair as i stacked my chips, and don't think i played a pot for the next 3 hours.

(god this is really long...oh well, it's a well, deal with it)

ok so i'ts end of 2006/early 2007 now...i'm a senior in college and i have like $125 on stars and like $400 in my bank account. i learned the rules to razz, and realized that iw as making like $12/hr playing 1/2 razz. (never had a lot on stars cause i was still instantly cashing out)...i think this was the first time i really thought i could play poker for a living. i mean, my sample size was like 4 hours...but there was that hint of oh wow i'm actually making money. i was a senior, and living with my friend who played poker (not the baller 1k kid, this other friend from high school) and my gf (who wasn't my gf at this time). my friend would always buy visa gift cards to deposit on stars, and we had a quick check (little convenient store, for those not from north jersey) right around the corner from our apartment so we'd always call each other and be like 'i'm stopping at quick check you need a $25 gift card?' i felt like the biggest degen ever one day cause i was down to $20 on stars since i had just cashed out $100 leaving myself a whopping $40 to grind with, and i wanted to take a shot in some mtts. i got back from class at 2:00, and the 3r started at 2:15, then there was a $5 or $10 omaha at 3pm...and another $10 nlhe at 3:15, it was like the perfect thing for me to play. and i knew i needed more than $20, so i stopped to get a $25 gift card. i snap busted everything and wanted to keep going...so i went back out and got another $25 gift card. jumped into a 1/2 razz game with all $25 (a whopping 12 big bets)...and lost it all. a few min after i lost it all my friend calls and is like, hey i'm on my way home, u need anything from quick check...and i'm like uhhhhh yeah uh get me a $25 gift card. i felt sooooooooooo degen losing 3 gift cards. i made the last $25 last me a few days though. (lol looking back at all these moments is so funny now)

at some point, i taught my gf (again, not my gf at this time) to play poker, and we used to play heads up in the apartment a lot. we also used to take random trips down to ac to grind. we were only like an hour and change from ac, and we used to go on like a friday night at like 9pm...she'd play 2/4 limit, and i'd play 1/2 with like $200 and just play absurdly tight as fuck...eventually flop a set and get paid off. (she did pretty well playing 2/4 too, considering the game is basically un-beatable) and we would come home at like 8am. this one night, i was up to like $400, and there was this mannnnniac guy who had like 1k in front of him and was in every pot, he raises to 12, i flat AQ, it comes AQ4r and he checks, i bet 20 cause i was scared about like anything at all coming...and this guy just shoves for everything i've got. now, clearly...this is like the easiest call in teh world...he's a total maniac and he literally could have had like 54o here or even worse.........i tanked.....for about 7 minutes lolololol. my friend was at the other end of the table and started making bets with people whether i was gonna call or not, he made like $100 betting that iw as gonna call. i called...the idiot had like A9o and i won the biggest pot of my life.

  20. early 2007 i was getting into photography and had like $900 in the bank (mostly from playing live cash, i think i was about break even online with all my cashing out and depositing antics) and like $75 on stars. i wanted a digital camera, so took $700 of my 900 and bought a nice one. was obviously an awful decision, but i didn't care, wanted one and was a college student, didn't care if i was broke. annnyway i played the $11 6max that started at like...11:15pm? on stars the very next day. i have the hh still and went over it recently. my turn bet % was literally 0. i would cbet flop, if i got called i woudl always check the turn...then on the river if i had nothing i woudl check, and if i had a hand with value i would bet. it was so funny...i somehow chopped it for $1100 though. camera was paid for, plus more. i was soooo happy, i coudln't sleep. very next day i took my gf (still not my gf at this time) and our roommate and his gf out to dinner, was such a great feeling to have actually had a win. i mean, $1100 was like, the most money i'd ever heard of in my life.

after this, i knew mtts were what i was gonna do. i was always drawn to them, but really put my focus into them. i stopped dicking around in razz cash games (a lesson i learned much quicker than goldenad did...zinnnnngggg) and put my focus on mtts. i found pocketfives sometime in 2007 and posted a bunch. summer '07 i'm out of college and working at a music store with 0 clue what i'm gonna do in life. graduated with a degree in geology, which i kind of knew i was never gonna use. i was still playing a lot. my gf was working a job where she had to get up early, so she would go to bed at like 10pm and i was playing like late night stuff like midnight madness on ftp. at some point i switched from stars to ftp, idk why, i just wanted something different, and i never thought of playing on 2 sites at once. i was only playing like 2 or 3 tables at a time at this point too, so one site had more than enough fo rme. anyway, i swtich to ftp...and i had deep runs in midnight madness a few times for like $900 scores. one night i won one of those $24 tokens and did the $24 6max at 11pm (yup, another late night 6 max tourney)...somehow i make it to the final table. first was like 3k and i was soooo nervous. i kept looking at the payouts and was trying to not worry about them, but coudln't help it. now remember, back then ftp had this awwwwwwful structure, plus you coudln't make deals on that site. i get heads up, and first is 3k and 2nd is like 1800 and i'm like ok fuck it, i can't chop, let's just win...and wound up making some absurd hero call with 22 on like JJ734 and was good to win it (pretty sure all of the hh i've said are 100% accurate, i have a really weird memory for boards and hands and stuff).

actually, i lied earlier, cause at this point i had $0 on stars, i had cashed it all out...anyway...i had this one degenerate friend who used to like make bad echeck deposits and stuff (found this all out much later when i actually knew about this shit) and he would play this 5/10 game locally. i went one day and was gonna just play online in the other room, and this kid was asking me what i was playing on, and i said ftp. he said he wanted to try ftp so we swapped $26 for stars money. i said i hadn't played on there and would give it a shot. i took the $26 on stars and played my bread and butter: the 3r and the $10 fo. 7 hours later, i'm chopping the 3r for $5500. i snap cashed out like 4500, and left some on to play with.

it' s now 2008 i started talking with a couple people from nj. one of them being doubledave22. i don't know why i started talking to him tbh. i think i saw some posts and wanted people to go to ac with that i could talk poker with and pm'd him.

oh yeah, i took a job working at an elementary school as a staff assistant in an autistic class. i worked with kindergarten and first graders basically 1 on 1 and would teach them. they had all these programs that we would run through, for most of them it was basic stuff 'tocuh your head, touch your feet, show me your hands, where's the door' but some of them did more advanced stuff like 1st grade math and reading and whatnot, depended on the kid. but it was for the most part really cool. i hated getting up early, especially since i woudl come home and play poker until like 1am...then ahve to be in school at 7am the next day...but it was an interesting job. i've got a ton of crazy stories about thigns the kids did and whatnot, but def another time. i was getting paid total shit tho, like something like $16k/year or something. i got benefits at least, but still, it was like pennies.

i always had this dream of playing the world series of poker...i would watch it on tv all the time. so when i saw stars had sats to the main event for only $10 i had to try them...little did i know they were 3x turbos and you needed lik e$200 to play them. my strategy: spend $33 and try to win it. lol. god i was so dumb at times...anyway...ya, clearly, i win one. i remember being heads up...first was 12k...2nd was $550...i'll tell you, you get over being scared real fast when you keep getting put in spots like that. i win it, and just take the cash. part of me wanted to go play the main event...but 12k was almost what i make in a year, so i obviously just put a ton of it in the bank

anyway, it's august, i'm down the shore, dave had just had a really big score in the $75 on ftp for like 14k. so he was sort of my hero at this time...anyway dave im's me...apparently someone has offered to stake him in the ftops event that night, and wanted to know if he should do it. we had both been trying to satellite in, to no avail...so i was like yeah why not, do it. 11 hours later, i'm in my shore house wiht like no internet connection in bed watching dave take 3rd in this thing for over 100k. i was in shock. was such an absurd feeling, knowing that someone you know just won 100k. 100k!!!!!

end of summer, i start reading 2p2 a bit, and find out that there's a tourney series at turning stone. i had a little bit of money now and i felt real confident just watching dave, who i was confident i was on a simiilar skill level to, ship such a big score...so i head up to turning stone and buy into the $550 tourney. biggest buy in i had ever played. well, first table i'm at it's all these young kids who all know each other. i hear them talking and i recognize some of the names they say from the 2p2 threads (i didn't post on 2p2, just lurked)...kingdan, cre8tive, redirkulous, agame, argentinaboy...god who else...it was a pretty absurd table, it was like 7 2p2'ers, one old guy, and me. i felt totally outclassed. even tho i had a couple scores under my belt, these guys were high stakes regs...and 2p2 kids...they knew their shit. i was some no name guy who never even played a 100r before. every time they played a pot vs me i felt like they bluffed me or raped me. it was 75/150...we start with like, idk, 7k or wahtever. i probably had like 6k at the time...i open to 400 with 98hh from the hijack i think..folds to argentinaboy on the button, who 3b to 1200...now. for those of you that don't know, this is 2008 alex argentinaboy queen we're talkinga bout here...like, he's probably just gonna flat with AK. his range is probably exactly KK+ here. he was a huge huge nit back then...i obviously had no idea, and just knew he was one of these 2p2 kids who i thought was great and bluffing a lot. also, it's 2008!!!!! no one made moves pre-ante EVER. but i wasn't gonna have it anymore...i shoved, he snapped...i sheepishly turn over my 98hh and alex has KK. the table chuckles at this idiot kid going all in with 98hh...this woudln't be a story if i lost the pot tho, right?....flop is Jh Th Xx...turn 7x...river Ah...i make my straight and my flush. wind up taking 5th or 6k for like 3k (as an aside, some hendon mob investigating from i think agriffrod showed me that not only were there a ton of 2p2/p5's legends at this ft, but also main event champion jonathan duhammel was at this ft as well...so funny how small the world is sometimes). i met hu4rollz at this ft, he got 3rd or something, and he offered to buy some of my action in the main event at this series. i had never really had any exposure to staking before or anything like that, so this was the first time i was involved in anything like that.

  21. beginning of 2009, i had become pretty good friends with 99nvrlosez and bboy3110, us 3 and doubledave all talked a lot at this point. i also began talking to some other p5'ers like shanetrain22 and neverscaredb EDIT: i added the nsb story down below.... i knew i wanted to be backed. the thought of someone else paying fo rme to play so i didn't have to worry about losing was definitely a plus (remember that was my original goal, to not lose...and in some ways, it never went away)...i just didn't know anyone. one day bboy im'd me and was like hey are you thinking about being backed? and i was like yeah...why....and he said his friend backs people and wanted more horses. that friend was dipthrong, and i've been backed by him ever since.

by the end of the school year in 2009 (so may or so) i left my job at the elementary school. there were some stupid political things at the school making it not fun to go anymore...also, it got to the point where iwas making so much money playign poker that i literally stopped picking up my paychecks at work. the secretary would track me down eventually and hand me a stack of 3 or 4 of them and be like here, you never got these.

the rest is kind of history...i started talking to a ton more people through bboy and eventually through dipthrong. went to the wsop in 2009 and because of my backing deal i had won a main event seat and was able to play the main event...was such a surreal experience.

EDIT: oh yeah, i know what i forgot. after my win of the main event seat in 2008...i won an 11r for around the same amount. the interesting part of the story is that 3 handed it was me, teamwispy, and neverscaredb....i didn't know either of them at the time. but i had a hud and nsb was running like 45/35 or something abusrd. he was the most aggressive player i'd ever played against and was givng me so much trouble. in the end i picked off a few of his bluffs, making one real big call of his 3barrel with like 4th pair or something, and wound up winning it. i found him on p5's and sent him a PM about some hands that we played. we began to talk a lot and share hands. he certainly helped me to think about hands in different ways than the 'standard' way of thinking.

ok this is way too long as it is, so i'm gonna end it here. that was my not so short story about how i got started in poker. after 2009, a lot of you guys know about, cause i was posting a ton on p5's and started moving up in the rankings and whatnot, so it's not as interesting....hope at least one person reads all of what i wrote, def were some funny stories/experiences along the way.

holy shit that was long...i need a break after that one.

also, copyright 2011 Gags30...feel like i could have just written an autobiography, lol

  22. Hey gags thanks for doing this well, good stuff so far!

What are some of your favorite bands/movies/shows?

GL in the future with whatever you do. lol pretty sure you've owned me harder at the tables than any other single player, but i've always enjoyed playing against you.

    3. Whats your favourite colour?

I just wanted to add that I respect your game alot, and you are, imo, one of the best.

    1. kind of answered already, currently talking with a few people about potentially moving in with them and getting back online within a couple of months

    2. umm...tbh i don't really know THAT much about your game. i do remember abusing you in a few tourneys tho :-) probably like 5.5? on the nitty side, but not so nitty that it makes you bad. you always seemed pretty solid, and just like a standard solid winning player.

    3. i fucking hate colors. seriously, like, it's dumb that like some go with others and some don't. and like, there's always that one shade of purple/red/black/blue that you can't fucking tell what it is. just is annoying.

some people will tell me that i like blue or green, cause i have a lot of clothes those colors...but, those are just the colors that they make the pants that i wear in...

thanks for the kind words! definitely means a lot to me.

  24. Epic story about getting started in poker. (Yes, I read every word)

Who is the best hold 'em player of all time? all around player of all time?

You are very confident in your game and have the right to be (I have read your HH posts which I love, do more plz, amazing to see such deep thought process) but are there any players that you ever run into that you feel outclass you? If not outclassed are there any other players on an equal level that give you trouble or that you don't want to see on your left?

Last, thank you for the well. I look forward to the rest of the great information I can obtain from this thread.

  25. Hey Gags,

I like you, here are some questions:

    1) i want more stories from your autistic kindergarten teaching days. talk about your favorite student ro something.

    2) name one poker player that you think is better than me that i'd be like fuck no man no way _____ is better than me, and why?

    3) ive been thinking about coaching more lately, discuss how being a good player does not necessarily equal being a good coach. why are you a good coach? would i be a good coach in your opinion?

    4) how many pairs of shorts do you own?

    5) thanks for making me spend 60 dollars on starcraft. that game fucking sucks. why'd you make me buy this game you should've known I would never have the patience?

    6) who is your favorite sports team/player of all time?

    7) construct your dream final table. where would this be played? who would be in what seat? why?
  26. great well gags!

-most satisfying win you ever had over a player?
-whats worst advice /poker theory you ever got?
-would you rather fight a horse sized duck or 10 duck sized horses?
  27. 1. who in your opinion is the best nlhe player in the world? why?

    2. who is the best online nlhe player in the world? why

    3. who is your fav. stand up comedian

    4. who is going to win the wsop main event this year?

    5. who has taught u the most about poker.

    6. what was the biggest turning point in your poker career?

    Thanks for doing this.

i definitely don't play every tourney that there is just to play it. if i feel i don't have an edge, or a marginal edge, i'll pick something else to play. both of those tourneys you have are good examples...also, tourneys like the 100c turbo and the 100quad i hardly every played cause they were really small and filled with regs. sure, i was probably +ev in them, but i would rather play a tourney like a 50fo where i have much bigger edge and my variance is going to be a lot lower in too.

um...i don't have an edge over ANY field. i definitley would say i probably have an edge on most nlhe fields though. i skip a bunch of things like online 10ks and stuff like that because i just don't thinkt hey're worth it. if i have an edge in something like that it's gonna be ungodly small...sure if i bink it'll be great, but most of the time i'm just gonna lose 10k, and again, i hate playing high variance poker like that

    4) If you could slowroll one online player deep in a tournament who would it be?
    5) When will you finally hit a big score in a live tournament?
    6) Borgata next month?

hi francis, i will always love you

    1. mostly answered, read that novel that i wrote and decide for yourself what my breakthrough score was...personally, i feel like i'm still waiting for my big breakthrough score (seriously, i don't have many (any?) giant scores, and very few major fts, and no big live wins...hoping to change all that soon though)

    2. umm...super tough one. i've always had more problems with people that play extremely unorthodox styles. really aggressive players like jymaster or moorman obviously are not good to play against, but i always kind of felt like i had a good feel for their style...they were gonna be aggro, and be bluffing a lot. sure, it's easy to say they're bluffing, but can be tough to respond to, but i always felt like i could either stay out of their way, or get into a dogfight and at least run with them...

i had the most trouble with people who played really strangely, people like babyshark or even squee to some extent. people that you just never knew what they were gonna do with hands, they might flat, they might 3b, they might fold...and then all their unorthodox postflop stuff. squee impressed me a lot a few times. i remember when i frst saw him play i was like, wow this guy just has the nuts a lot and isn't very good and is just running hot. then after watching play a bunch and playing with him i realized he was bluffing actually quite a bit. people like that are real tought o play against cause they're so good at playing against your perceived range that they can just totally own you in a lot of spots

    3. eek, another tough one. i'm gonna say mastap89. i didn't realize he was under-rated until i lived with him this summer. i knew him for a while and he was always like decent/ok/good. he was aggro, and was a winning player. but after talking hands with him this summer i realized that he's actually really really good. (ehhh that's not really under-rated, tha'ts more unknown i guess...he was under-rated in my eyes...so, i think that'll still suffice)

    4. lol...if it was a tourney like the late night 50r turbo, it would definitely be you. just cause i knwo how much you love slowrolling people. if it was actually a tourney where there was big money to be won, like the mil or a big live tourney or something, then i would def never slowroll a friend. i generally don't like slowrolling people in these kinds of situations, cause it's pretty bad sportsmanship, esp when there's a lot of money to be won...but idk, if it was like...derek8 and i coudl slowroll him...i def would. if anyone has ever played with him, you'll understand why, lol

    5. hmm, your guess is as good as mine. i'm going to an ept coming up soon, so hopefully sooner than later

    6. maybe, i'm going to vegas in early nov for the wsop final table, then i'm going to prague in late nov for the ept...so i'll be down there a few days in between. i'm sure i'll see you

1. sort of answered this in my long book i wrote above...i quit my job in early 2009, so i guess i've only played poker since then. i did play quite a bit in the year before that tho. i am, in fact, almost 27...i turn 27 in may...so...ya. umm, like i said before, i don't feel like i'm done with poker yet, i have some more things i want to accomplish, and quite frankly i still love playing. when either of those 2 things aren't there any more, then i'll probably move on and find something else.

    2. it's pretty sad that there's no online poker in the US. i randomly have these moments where i just think about it, and i get sad. i opened my poker email the other day and was looking at all the emails from april 12th and 13th of like congratulations you finished in 78th place for $58.32 and was like...wow, i miss this a lot. also, on saturday nights i get kind of sad. it was always so much fun registering for a sunday and getting mentally prepared for the long day ahead.

i've been playing a lot live...some tourneys some cash. idk, live isn't the same. it's sooooo much slower and is definitely more of a 'grind' than online was. i enjoy the live tourneys a ton, it's the cash that i dont' really like. and it hink if you're gonna play live for a living you have to play cash, just so much more money to be made. i've been playing like 2/5 5/5 and 5/10 and my local casino, whatever runs...and it's pretty easy money. it's just like, not mentally stimulating at all. in most games the most +ev way to play is just wait for a hand and let people pay you off. which like...idk, i'm not playing poker, i'm just sitting there making money. that competitive edge just isn't there like it is in online tourneys

    3. like i mentioned, i have a ridiculous control over my emotions. i think that definitely has helped me in this game. i can understand how people get like super greedy for money and whatnot...but like i said, from the start, i didn't get into poker to make money. i got into it cause it was fun. being able to actually make money doing it is just an added bonus. when i do well in an mtt, i'm excited because i won the mtt, not because i made the money. the best advice i can give to someone is work on getting better at poker. and just focus on that. too many people say 'how can i make more money' or 'how can i play bigger buy-in tourneys'...just focus on playing the best poker you can at whatever level you can. if you have $100 to your name, play $1 sngs and figure out how to beat them. once you figure that out, keep doing it and eventually you'll have $200 and you can move up to $2 sngs....rinse and repeat...dont focus on the money/results, focus on the actual game

    4. lol well hopefully you're right. idk, a bunch of people have asked me to do one lately. i always wanted to save the well for when i had felt accomplished in poker. who knows, that day may never come...had a nice hiatus cause of black friday...and no i go forward with the next part of my poker career, and the well is here to start that...

meh, that sounded better in my head...

    7. what do you think in your opinion are the most underrated aspects of mtt's / what are the simple mistakes you see people make in live or online tournaments?

    1. definitely definitely online. i've always known that live poker is ungodly soft. i just enjoy online so much more. also, to make what i make 12 tabling online, like $/hr i'd need to play pretty high stakes live stuff, which i'm not always comfortable/rolled to do

    2. i'm from nj. was born in ny, but moved here when i was like 8 or so

    3. that's a good question. i always knew that you could make money playing poker. like, when i played as a kid, i was 11 years old, playing for nickels, and i wasn't a losing player. i probably just understood the rules better than some of my friends (we had to pull out the hoyle rule book a few times to figure out if a A's and 2's beat K's and Q's (my one friend was convinced you added their values together, so like 20 would be higher than 13 or whatever so the K's and Q's would win...he obviously was not correct))...but like, there were some friends that always lost...there was 1 or 2 that always won, and then i was somewhere in the middle. i would break even a lot or win a tiny bit. so i knew from the start that if i knew what i was doing i could play poker without losing money. i guess i figured out i was profitable sometime when i was playing sngs...i would just turn my $25 into $100 and cash out $50...and be back at $50...something like that...and i would just keep doing that. once in a while i'd lose it all and have to re deposit, but like i was taking out more money than i was putting on...again, it was never my goal to make money, i jsut played to have fun...the money was a side result

    4. reading about the game a ton. reading every post i could, and posting in them and debating with people. trying to back up my stupid arguments with mathematical facts. i used to feel great when someone would say something like 'oh 88 is definitely a call here vs this guy's shove if he's shoving TT+AQ+'...and we'd be getting 1.5:1 on the money, and i would come into the thread and post a pokerstove of 88 only being 37% vs TT+,AQs+,AQo+ and proving the other person wrong. a lot of those stupid arguments helped me a ton to get a real solid fundamental background. when you really look at it, that's the stuff that makes you a winner...the fancy stuff like 3b and 4b and being aggressive is just icing on the cake that helps you go from a winner to someone who crushes tourneys.

    5. surprisingly enough, i don't smoke weed. most people are shocked when i say that (i apparently look like a pot head)...but ya...i just never got into it. a ton of my friends smoke a ton, it was just never my thing

    6. i'm gonna defer this question to bboy3110 and comandr_cool...stay tuned for an answer

loll...nah, umm...i'm a picky eater, i like grilled cheese quite a bit tho. i really like chicken too, in texas de brazil they have this bacon wrapped chicken that's really really good. i also don't really drink a lot, like very very rarely. i've drank maybe 4 or 5x in the last 3 years, and absolutely hate beer. i'm like 120 lbs so if i have 1 drink i'm like instantly wasted (very few poker players have had the honor of seeing me inebriated)...when i drink i like mixed stuff...gin and tonic i guess. again, i have nothing against people that drink, and i go out to bars all the time with my friends...i jsut never got into getting drunk like people did

    7. most people's biggest mistakes are just fundamental things like, they're utg and are playing garbage hands...or they're in the bb and lp raises and they defend with J8s. things like that are actually really really big leaks and cause way more problems than people realize. some things that are under-rated in mtts are probably like chip accumulation things. once you're in the money of a tourney people just sit around and wait for hands, and wind up getting short stacked, and eventually losing a flip. they bitch about losing the flip but don't realize that they should have had more chips than that before the hand started. so maybe if they lost hte flip they still would have had 10bb ro something to try to come back. always chip upppppp
