  1. a poker bill be tacked onto another Huge, important bill that MUST be passed...Similar too the port act which passed easily. Harry Reid is introducing a bill or something for these debt talks, What prvents him from throwing this thing on the back pages and speeding this process up by 2 years!?

  2. No legislator wants to step up and put his career up on such bill. They make no campaign funds for this type of activity.

They don't see much benefit from gaming legislation.
  3. Hi Duffy... :) I never post but you get one...and I don't know.

Maybe I'm wrong, but wouldn't there be a ton of benefit from website taxes & player taxes from gaming that they're missing out on?

Perhaps, but it's important to remember that politicians respond first and foremost to political incentives. Just because an idea makes sense or would be good policy doesn't mean it will always get passed, especially when most of their constituents are satisfied with the status quo. I think a lot of legislators view a poker bill as a high risk, no reward proposition. They know they won't get defeated for re-election because they didnt support an online poker bill. But there is a possibility that if they do support one, their opponent will use it to vilify them as pro-gambling or pro-vice or whatever.

That being said, I think the revenue angle is the best way to approach this. If online poker can be pitched as a way to put more money in government coffers, helping to reduce the deficit, then that is an argument that otherwise indifferent legislators can take to the voters.
  7. I believe the PPA mentioned that while highly unlikely, there is a very slim chance that this could be a possibility, and I think they have mentioned this to the lawmakers. I wouldn't get your hopes up, though.

  8. I think it's also tougher if House Speaker Boehner isn't onboard with online poker.

  9. So what's up with the current bill. Does it seem like it's going to pass? not pass? still to early to tell?

You should listen to the most recent edition of the PocketFives Podcast with the bill's sponsor, Joe Barton. Pretty eye-opening about where the bill stands.

  11. Well according too fox news Republicans just attached a legalization of online gaming onto the Debt Deal. Same way they took it away they can BRING IT BACK!?

From what I've read on 2p2 I don't think that this is the case. There was a 15 page thread concerning this same exact segment that you are undoubtedly referencing (Stossel talking to Jared Polis). The thread was closed as there's really no new information disclosed by the segment.

  14. LOL I just watched the video posted on the other site and they definitely did not say anything about this actually happening at all, they merely suggested that it should and possibly could. Personally I hope it happens but am not particularly optimistic that it will.

  15. is this like the unlocked continuation?

  16. Thanks for wasting 3-4 minutes of my life that I will never get back........this link does not say squat about poker or a poker bill and is in no way related to a poker discussion.
  17. Go republicans, fuck democrats.

    This.
  19. don't know that it would ever happen but the debt bill would be a perfect piece of legislation to attach it too because they could put it in there as "hey, here is another source of revenue" and as that arbitrary Aug. 2nd deadline approaches it would be hard to not pass the bill on the basis of a poker bill being attached. They will probably never do it, but in theory it sounds like a great way to get a bill passed, and fast.

You do bring up a good point, but again, it requires the involvement of leadership on the poker bill itself in order to make this happen. Remember that online poker "only" provides $30 billion to $40 billion in revenue over 10 years, or $3 billion to $4 billion per year. The budget debate right now is focusing on the trillions of dollars.

I agree completely that it is a drop in the bucket, however it's a way to legitamately get it into the bill and would not stop even bible belt republicans (who are really the only reason why gambling is not universally accepted) from passing the bill. But again, I should add that i don't believe this will ever happen, but in theory it would work.
