I attempted to take advantage of partypoker's deposit bonus last month, but kept running into hands like the following and don't ever want to go back.
At a $2/$4 limit table, I raise from MP with AA and only an EP limper calls. Flop is 733 rainbow. He comes out firing. I play enough low limit to know that means he doesn't have a 3 or 77, so I call to trap him. turn is an 8. He bets again. I raise and he 3 bets. 88 is possible but unlikely so I cap it. River is another 8. He fires again. I make the crying call as he turns over K8 offsuit. Yep, he had a monster. I'm 99.4% to win after the flop. Only running kk or 88 beats me. The worst beat I've ever had online.
One week ago a similar situation happened on UltimateBet. Luckily I was taking a break from my usual limits and only playing $.50/$1.
Once again I raise an EP limper with AA in MP. We see the T22 rainbow flop heads up. He check calls my bet. Turn is a K. He bets, and I raise his obvious pair of kings. He just calls, which shows that players on UB are smarter than those on Party. River is another king. He bets, and I forget to use the fold and show option. Instead I waste a dollar and call. He flips over KJ and I show my aces. 97.8% post flop this time. KK, JJ, or Q9 beat me.
These hands are what I consider the worst bad beats. I've been on both ends of a low set rivering quads to beat a higher set. Yeah, one outers suck. But at least in that situation the person has a reason to be in the hand, especially in limit where no one folds a flopped set. It's when I lose to someone who has absolutely no reason to be in the hand that I get the most angry. Just my opinion, gambowler. -
Gambowler,
You're absolutely right about the frustration. I play low-limit ring games, and have lost AA to dominated hands several times. You want to turn the game into no-limit just for one hand so you can get all your chips in pre-flop. I think the best way to deal with it, and I've had some success this way, is to start putting your obviously weaker opponents on A-lowcard or K-lowcard, in similar situations. A3, K5, Q4, these hands get played and bet like they're the nuts. I try to recognize that, and slow down on the flop or turn if my high pair or drawing hand doesn't improve. On those occasions when my 2 pair or set hits later, I jam the pot, and get called constantly. Good way to make quick cash in low-limit.
