I've now begun using a strategy that works! i just never get all in until the turn! it works so well because rarely does the river card allow them to suck out on me if i have the nuts on the turn. i never shove pre flop, never call a shove pre flop, and never shove on the flop even if i have 2bb. it really eliminates a lot of heartache and i just know a tournament win will come once i get deep into a tournament with over 100 big blinds so i don't have to worry about any all in confrontations until the turn. this strategy has so far worked in 3 mtts that i've tried it in. once i get a large sample size (5 mtts or more) i will report back with results and hopefully a brag post of a $100 or more win! let's bust the RRNGs (rigged random number generators) guys! we can do it! -
One time on merge I flopped a full house and lost to quads on the river. So f rigged, truly sick.
-
First off I am asking about ALL in EV, which is the best measure I have for how "lucky/unlucky" I am running. So, for all that say I play bad - thanks for the thoughts.
Secondly, I wanted to know what is the high end of extreme variance - is it being 10 buy ins below expectation over 5000 hands, 100 buy ins below EV over 50 000 hands. What is the high end of normal mathematical variance is all I am asking.
Funny comment on the merge full house though. Yesterday on merge I got it all in with QQ vs 44. Hit a Q on a rainbow flop. 4 turn. 4 river. nice hand merge.
I know these hands happen but how often can they happen within mathematical normalcy before questions need to be asked. -
well that's easy. according to chevysheb's theorum, anything that falls more than 2 standard deviations outside the mean is considered "a rare event." somebody walk down to an acutary's cube and get him.

OMG maybe this site will ban the people who said online poker is rigged like they did me cpl yrs ago . For about a week my account was closed and had to explain in an email why I am worthy to comeback to P5, pathetic

sigh if only i knew how to post those hilarious "you mad" gifs then mayb i could b cool just once in my life.
ps to the mods i'll pay atleast a few bucks to make what i quoted my under title on p5's. and to rotay pretty sure you should chill, you're taking all this a lil to serious. what always helps me is just thinking about other ppl's beats that cost them far more equity then mine do and just shake it off
eidt: forgot to add the most important thing... positive mindset, i know it sounds dumb but its really amazing what a difference it can make -
No. First, it's Chebyshev's inequality. Second, it relates to a sample from a distribution such that 1/n^2 of the distribution is within n std deviations from the mean, nothing in it refers to being within 2sds fot he mean. Perhaps you're thinking of a normal distribution. Third, you need to know the mean and standard deviation...and the whole point of this thread is asking what is a reasonable standard deviation.

OP -- what is your sample size? How many BI's below EV are you running? -
Thanks for the input get-raised. I know a positive mind set helps. I truly believe it.
I went back to play on merge and tried for the umpteenth time to have a positive outlook. I even dropped a level to 1-2 NL. In the span of an hour, I got it all in three times with pair over pair - lost all three.
If this was one session, two or maybe three sessions in a row - it is not a thread I post. Just a case of the run bads.
But this has happened, or similar such "luck" for so many consecutive sessions that I just thought I'd pose the question -- is it really just bad luck?? -
that's what i meant.

That's definitely not bad enough for it to be rigged. I've run 10 BIs +/- AI EV in a single <1k hands session of PLO. Seems like standard variance tbh. Stay positive, play through it, and dont worry about about AIEV.

i may sound drunk but figure it out.I'm not re-typing , sets are extremely frequent on merge 22-99 golden qq-kk = death AA ACTUALLY SEEMS TO DO WELL AND IS ABOUT THE MOST NORMAL HAND ON THERE ,oh yah ace rag kills ace pic

when you guys used to study for tests in school or whatever, would you always blame the teacher for doing bad? or would you just drink/not study hard so that you would have a built-in excuse already?
life's fun when you never have to look at yourself hard in the mirror -
funniest part is way back when your friend supposedly played on sportsbook it was on the cake network. Not merge, so go toss your dumb theories out elsewhere.

The reason I haven't said anything yet is I already know what most of the replies will be.....1)small sample, 2)variance, 3)shark-tank, 4)quit limping tool, 5)lose your password, and 6)go play chess.
still, i've had coolers, and I did notice how tough the cash tables were- a lot of playback and good value bets on the river creating tough decisions, but this feels different from normal variance and just good play. what i mean is, i guess i don't play every tourney like its the WSOP ME, but i still have a good understanding of pre-flop hand strenght, tourney dynamics, fold equity, etc. So, in spots that I take a line that may be "a tiny spewy" it seems as if they ALL fail. The game is complex enough that doing enough things right, and a couple things slightly less than optimal should only effect your ROI a little bit, not wreck your entire approach to the game. other than being "a tiny spewy," sometimes I'm looking at the overall tourney dynmics, stack sizes, etc and I make an aggressive move to keep pace with the chip average, and it just never works.
what i keep thinking back to was 2 years ago when i first started playing. my roommate had played for a while several years earlier during college, but was never big into it. he warned me then, that how they drive up their rake is pitting good hands against eachother, and where did he play all those years ago? sportsbook. this is exactly what i see on merge, its a goddam mine field. i feel like if i adjust my entire game to a total ABC "optimal TAG" i can make money, but when i consider adjusting to the style of play, i hate having to adjust to the houses random number. prolly just variance, but let's just see what others have to say.... btw- who runs merge and why did they need to luck-box their way into customers if they've been around so long???? -
A couple things I noticed about the merge RNG is that A-X pwns KQ all day... like honestly I'd have to say that A-X is beating KQ on here like 70% of the time over tens of thousands of hands probably. It felt the opposite was true at least on FTP and stars, which is kinda weird.
Another thing I noticed is that chops happen so much more often it seems with the board double pairing, or a straight/flush being run out as well.
I don't think it's rigged, but I have seen some fkd up hands happen which at one point made me think there could be possible super users, that could see what board cards were coming (only the board cards not everyones hole cards like the pot ripper scandal on UB)
I'm gonna post these hands, feel free to check them out... I'm not a rigged theorist, but at the same time, with all thats happened in the past, and the current state of online poker, I don't think anyone should be austracized for claiming rigged cuz clearly it could be possible with the way poker is right now.

nobody on here giving excuses most peeps on here i believe are profiting on merge .its just things that are noticeable i will mention anothr thing i noticed if ur on draw and collect 15+ outs good luck catching, the draws tht hit more frequent are the non worthy ones
well now i know who thekeymaker is, anyhow dude , dcttapeworm is looser than the word itself ,utterly ridiculous, but tht ace-10 wow guy is on crack, however amazingly enough 2 of your other ones had ,wht ive seen as merge's golden non pair hands, k8 suit and 10-8 suit , it makes this whole thread really interesting imo ......and also i agree i dont think its rigged but i think that rng could use an overhaul, well manch by any chance did u look up if these guys are cleaning house on wins??? i dont think duct tape worm is thats just wht tht guy does but the others couldnt tell ya -
Thanks for posting those hand histories -- some looked very familiar. Especially the guy calling with a gutshot the whole way and smashing it on river. Happened to me for full buy ins twice in one session a couple of days ago.. Things that make you go hmmmm.
I know it is hard to believe after this thread - but I am not a "rigged" theorist either. I have been playing online poker for about 8 years and doing quite well, until I switched to this smaller site. I am just really curious if others were noticing the same thing on merge.
I think I just have to leave this site and go back to stars where my numbers on pokertracker have shown more normal "luck", whether winning or losing.
My live stats are WAY better than my online stats in the last two years -- anyone else have that trend? -
You've been a member of P5's since 2006 and you really need to ask if other people do better live than online? I'm starting to think this entire thread is just a massive level.

Reason: Ya live players suck, what a revelation -
i was reading a thread the other day ( can't remember which one) and ppl were saying that you don't really need skill to win on lock poker, so ppl are starting to see what you see. Also, was playing on lock the other night, my AA was cracked by 99 on a river 9 (5%) when he called my 4 bet pre, called flop bet, called turn bet and pushed on river w/ 3 overs on board and no draws. Was turned by 44 w/ a 4 on turn all in pre w/ 99 later in same tourney. In a cash game my AQs was beat by 88 all in pre when I flopped a Q and he hit a runner-runner 4 flush (clubs) when he called pre w/ 88 w/ the 8 of clubs. down about 5 bills on lock in about 3 weeks. so many sick beats, one right after the other.

Move this thread to Poker Strategy imo

lets not carried away with the bad beat stories,or playn on merge is pure luck, listen carefully!! if u believe this than u bumped your heads. the players at the top of the opr arent protecting there cards witha pair of dice. i just know what i see and imo it can at times make things difficult .....now i also know ive done some dumb asz shyt too but hey it is what it is .......lmao i was so tempted too call a gut shot for a grip just now too see if i could post a hand ........imucked i couldnt do it :(
