I'll try to keep this kinda short.
Had a $1400 roll b4 double guarantees week. Took a few shots that I definitely shouldn't have taken and ran my roll down to $900. Since then, I've mainly played my normal schedule...maybe a tourney or two here and there above my br, but that's normal for me. Have been getting completely soul crushed in almost everything I play. Now my roll is at $675. Can't even seem to do well in 90 man kos that I'm usually very profitable playing. I've got a baby that is due next week and won't find too much time for poker, but I figure occasionally my wife will let me play on my days off. However, I'm not sure I have the stomach to keep on keepin on with the way I've been playing and running lately.
I know I shouldn't play above my roll level, but I have a job and never minded taking shots before. Some of the shots I took during dg week was way more than I usually do tho. Oh, and I've been a withdrawing player since I started playing again back in August...haven't deposited once since that time.
So, should I toss in the towel and w/d the rest? Should I just hang it up for a couple days and try again later? Should I just keep banging it out and positive variance will surely kick in, if I'm playing optimally? I was going to invest some money into a trainer, but that kinda fell thru once my roll started taking hits from my shots. WWYD? -
People vastly and grossly understate the amount of variance that is involved in all forms of tournament poker.

From a winning player over probably 3-5K 4.40 180s (non turbos) stretches where you cant get a 1st thru 3rd in over 100-200 games, while rare, are completely possible.
So if for tournaments with 180 players, those kinds of swings are possible, adding 100, 300, 500, players or increasing the structure (i.e turbos)...the potential swings go up infinitely. So swings where you don't catch a 1st thru 3rd can last thousands of games depending on your field sizes and structures.
Just some food for thought. -
I like what 9ball said thats the correct answer, I would say on days you can play a little maybe work on some steps (knowing u can play on sunday like a few $26 MTTS) and just play like 2-4 Sunday tourneys with your step 3 buy in... But some time away will be good DONT GIVE UP ON POKER ... POKER WILL NEVER GIVE UP IN YOU
GL/Grats on the baby.. -
I hit for 2500, withdrew 1000 and tried to get lucky and spent another grand cashing for only a few hundred and went right down to 800 so I know the feeling. Switch to playing optimally but maybe a couple less tables at a reasonable limit for your new bankroll. Obviously annoying to do (currently at 6 dollar turbo tables /kill myself making like 2 dollars an hour at 13 percent ROI) but better than quitting poker IMO. I'm glad I redeposited the money I withdrew.

Take a break, clear your head, spend sum time with your kid, if you have a decent liferoll then id leave your broll. Come back strong GL

double guarantee week was a pretty rough week for a lot of people, unless your name is shaun deeb
dont throw in the towel, take a few days off relax, take a breath and get back at it, you are fine. its poker, the day after you withdrawal you are going to be whining that you can't play
gl keep at it -
mega LOL at the first similar thread. oh how things have changed

I wouldn't withdraw if I were you unless you are just planning to not play at all for a long time. It's getting harder and harder to deposit for people in the US.

Pretty much this.

Step back, have a few days off to look where you could improve and list your faults(we all have some)
Review what games your playing & decide if it is better to change to something else.
Dont blame yourself for taking a shot or two, whats that line:- Better to have tried & failed, than never tried at all! -
Spectre is dead on!!!!! I just went through a 1000 game stretch where I couldn't win anything. Wanted to throw up everyday. It was also due to internet provider issues (loss of internet, etc.) but the point is I studied harder, and started each day out forgetting about the previous day and focussed on playing good fundamental poker. I'm getting out of the hole now and have turned things around but in the meantime I made a decision to go back to a "real" job and will not only play on my days off for the next 2 years, but......I will be funding my account which will enable me to play mid stakes MTT's and take my "shots" as much as possible. After 2 years we'll re-evaluate where I'm at skillwise, bankroll amount and success rate and see if we can go from there.

Hardest thing to learn is how to handle the inevitable bad beats. You have to say to yourself........."well that was the 25% of the time I don't win, oh well, etc." If you let the emotion take over for just a sec it will affect the rest of your games for sure. To much talkin' in the noggin and it will affect your play also. Stay focussed enough so you can "feel" the players. When you can do that the game will be over before you know it and you will have won. I'm sure you already know this stuff but thought you might need a reminder.
Good Luck, hope that helps! -
