  1. In the fall I think im gonna take Physics 1 + Lab, Organic Chem + Lab, Calc 3, and an intro to matericals science class. The materials class and physics lab are supposed to be easy. Calc should be manageable. Orgo and physics together are what scares me. I know a bunch of kids who struggle in each one seperately, so together i can't see it being any better. Anybody take a schedule that looked similar to this? Any engineers who could offer some advice on the difficulty of all these? Much appreciated.
  2. i max out 15 a quarter and my classes are cake compared to that crap your taking. maybe 16 or 17 if i take a phys ed class.
  3. I am a mechanical major, Bio medical minor.

Physics 1 is cake, just do not fall behind right in the beginning or catching up will really difficult. I took a material systems class our school calls it, really really easy stuff, just a lot of memorization. Calc 3 wasnt too bad, our work load depended on what professor you had, ours was not a whole lot of work outside of class if you could keep up. I didnt have to take O chem but I have heard it is a ton of work.

This semester I have Biology 2, Heat and mass transfer, engineering economics, advanced mechanics of materials and senior design. It is bending me over on top of working 25 hours a week.
  4. ya, all my friends taking ochem say its the worst class ever. gl
  5. I've heard from most people here that physics is really tough, but the grading system is a little softer so im hoping that will help me out. Organic chem is just gonna be a bitch and i know it, 9 hours of class a week for 5 credits. 4 exams (for the class part) and thats your grade. Its required for my degree tho so i wanna just get it out of the way since i need it for the higher level classes too. Oh well, im sure you got it worse since the only biomed i know just gets crapped on by the school.

  6. I had schedules just like this for every semester freshman year. You should be fine.

Calc 3 isnt bad. As long as you understand 1 & 2... 3 is fine. Physics is easy, just get on it early like the other guy said. Materials isnt that bad either.

Chem blows ass. Your going to hate it. I know I did.

Your an engineering student, so get used to semesters like this. Its going to be a lot of work. Just make sure you get on top of the course work early. Falling behind will fuck you.
  7. well Physics can be really really tough if it doesn't click right off the bat. I knew a lot of kids who had to retake it, it was definitely the first class the required a lot of outside class work. We had these homework problems writtne by this program called CAPA. We had a CAPA assignment due every Friday by 5 and they would take about 10 solid hours to get done. Everything in there is the basis for every class for the rest of you major, so it is definitely something you want to learn and not just pretend to learn enough pass.
  8. id quit and play poker
  9. Yea im pretty sure i need to average 15-17 credits a semester to graduate with my Materials Science Major and a minor in Econ. Im thinkin if i take spring classes i hopefully won't have to take this shitty of semester's all the time. Oh well, i like chemistry a decent amount but when i took inorganic my first semester the exams were the hardest ones i've taken so far. Oh well, at least i won't have to do anymore programming shit. I would rather cut my dick and balls off and have it become a traumatizing internet sensation than do that shit again.

  10. Yea i know i need physics 1 and 2. I've never taken it before (my high school was a joke, no AP or anything remotely challenging) but i hope that that way i'll give it enough attention and actually learn it. I know i need to take some ME classes too that i need this stuff for so i'll definitely need to learn the stuff.
    Thread Starter
  11. Im an ME major... and the physics is the basis for a lot of classes.

Make sure you actually learn it. What other ME classes do you have to take?
  12. I think i only have to take one 4 credit ME course for my degree, and ill probably take another one since i need 12 credits outside of my concentration. It's the intro ME course. This kid came in with 30 AP credits and tested out of all physics. He said this class dealt with moments and statics. Im not really sure what that is since i have very little background in physics but he said it wasn't too bad.

  13. That sounds a lot like my statics class haha. We had these long terrible 3 problem sets due MWF every week, it was a ton of work and a ton of material. Mine was kind of hard but I actually enjoyed it.
  14. I take 18 creds a semester but not the level of courses you are taking. I would say 18 creds with your courses already is suicidal. Mine are just finance/economics.

  15. Meah. Some of my friends said similar shit. They came in with loads of AP credits and can afford to take 12 a semester and graduate on time. I can't afford to take that few (my rents are currently paying for my tuition, but i know they can't afford it for very long). I just gotta sack up and work my ass off to graduate in time.

  16. yea you just got to suck it up.

I took 17-19 credits for my first 5 semesters. It sucks.
  17. Ochem sucks ass. i'm <strike>failing</strike> taking it right now
  18. Stay in school as LONG as you can. college is totally sweet. Van Wilder FTW!

  19. thats a lot of credits for taking those classes. At my old school people said cal 3 was easier then cal 2 if you understood that one. physics 1 shouldn't be too bad. o chem is going to bend you over no matter what. have fun living in the library for the semester.
  20. 18hrs won't be bad. It will likely impede on your social life occasionally, but no need to worry.
  21. I took pretty much the same schedule as that once, only it was Calc 2 and instead of Materials I added a Molecular Biology class. It's a tough workload, but it's definitely manageable.

I liked Organic. The lab is not really that bad either. The first hour or so you set up the experiment, and then you usually have at least an hour or two of down time. Just make sure to take a look at the experiment before you get into lab so you know what you're going to be doing, and don't have to waste time with the other school donks looking around at what everyone else is doing.

Physics should not be a problem with your background in Calc. That's what a lot of people struggle with in that course. Well, that and the formulas. The lab is a joke.

It's going to suck, but like you said, these are classes you have to take, so just suck it up and get through it. Good luck.
  22. i think it depends on the physics class.......we had to take a calc based physics class that required about 20hrs/week on its own and i took it with organic chem and some bullshit biology class (botany)........oc will be a bitch regardless, youll survive but you may have to give up your social life at certain times which isnt the point of college

i vote no, if you have this much time do more drugs imo
  23. when ppl say things like this i wonder;

a)have they ever taken a load like this with these classes

b)have they ever had a social life

c)are they just saying this for shits and giggles or to sound smart/experienced

    obv no offense meant
  24. You'll be fine, organic chem is not as hard as people make it seem. I took 17 or 18 credits every semester with ochem biochem etc. I was able to teach myself ochem 2 nights before each test without going to class and got an A-
  25. Yes I have experience. 27hrs Spring of my Junior yr...including Chem and Calc+20-30hrs a week part time job and a girlfriend.
  26. Just to answer your questions... I had 18 credits freshman year, so I just went back and looked at my class schedule. This is what it was.

    Monday: 8-12, 1-2

    Tuesday: 8-3

    Wednesday: 8-12, 1-3, 6-9

    Thursday: 8-3

    Friday: 8-12

If you dont feel like adding... thats 32 hours of class in one week. Thes classes included Calculus, Chem, Physics, Desing Lab, and a engineering humanities class. This schedule sucked ass, and looking back on it, I dont even know how I did it. From 8-10 every MWF, it wasnt even class, it was a schedule time period where we took an exam every week. Monday was a physics test, wednesday calc, friday was chem. So our exams didnt even take away from our class time.

As for my social life... I went out/ partied more freshman year then I have during any other year. I would sleep like 5 hours a night, and drink every weekend, and a couple nights during the week. Now that I think about it, i was an animal. I wish I could still be a beast like that.

They have actually done away with this cirriculum since. It was too hard and 66% of all engineering freshman dropped out or changed majors.
  27. I took 21 credits one semester and 18 the next, but that was all BS intro crap classes that I wanted to get out of the way.

You might want to think about this one, those are some tough classes.

Why not slow down, lighten the load, and actually LEARN something by concentrating on each one individually?
  28. You can do it, as long as you are disciplined and work hard. I took 20 hrs once in my 2nd yr of college, including Physics II (calc based), Calc III, Organic II (w/ lab), and Zoology (w/ lab). I think taking four 5 hour courses would be better than six or seven 3 hour courses.
  29. Im in pharmacy school and we are taking 20hrs this semester, its a lot of material but its very doable.

I really liked Ochem but some people hated it and really had a tough time with it in undergrad.
  30. The most I ever took in a semester was 14. But, during that time, I also had a job working about 15 hours a week, and I still felt like I had a social life and downtime. So, I would think this would be doable. But, I had friends who took 18 credit hours, and what helped them.

    1) Try to get ahead if possible. Before the semester starts, write a prof or 2, and get ahead on the reading.

    2) Don't fall behind early. For the first month, bust your ass to stay even in every class. Even if it means a few long days, it's worth it. Once you fall behind, you'll likely not catch up until the end, so don't do it early.

    3) Stay organized.

I think this is doable though. If not, it's only a few months of your life (I think most schools have 4 month semesters). You'll know better for next time if this is too much.
